Douglas Mickey Mantle team second at state
Two players take part in World Series

The Mickey Mantle baseball team from Douglas competed in the 16 and under state tournament in Surprise last month coming in second place to the Arizona Academy All-Stars.


After the tournament two Douglas players, Xavier Altamirano and Christian Dorame, were picked up by the All-Stars and traveled with their new team to the Mickey Mantle World Series in Oklahoma. Jason Sanez was also invited to join the team but was unable to make the trip.

The tournament which was held Aug. 4-9, consisted of teams from all over the United States. Arizona went 0-2 in the tournament losing to 8-5 to the Lasingburgh Royals of New York in game one before falling 20-5 to the YSL Blue Angels also from New York in game two.

Altamirano pitched in game one and hit 2 for 3 with an RBI. Dorame played right field in game one and was 1 for 1 from the plate.

Stats from game two were not available.

At the state tournament in Surprise Douglas opened up against the Arizona Academy All-Stars and fell 6-1.

Joel Barredo hit 3 for 4 this game, AJ Acosta was 2 for 4, Sanez 1 for 2 and Tony Young 1 for 4.

Douglas won the second game over Sahuarita 7-3.

Roy Aguirre was the winning pitcher. Altamirano picked up the save.

Barredo and Altamrano each hit 2 for 3 this game. Jorge Escalante was 2 for 2,  Young 2 for 4, Dorame and Joey Urquijo each were 1 for 2. Acosta was 1 for 4.

Game three was against the Arizona Angels. Douglas won that contest 13-8.

Dorame was the winning pitcher. Altamirano picked up the save.

Acosta hit 3 for 3 this game and had a home run. Barredo and Young each were 2 for 3, Dorame was 1 for 2 and Urquijo 1 for 3.

In the championship game Douglas again faced the Arizona Academy All-Stars and was again defeated by the same score of 6-1.

Acosta and Escalate each hit 2 for 4 this game. Altamirano was 1 for 2, Sanez 2 for 3 and Barrios 1 for 1.
