Douglas residents will gather at the Copper King Baseball Stadium on Saturday, October 3 – Sunday, October 4, 2009, at 10:00 A.M. to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Douglas.  Over the course of 15 years, the Relay for Life of Douglas has raised over $200,000.00 for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.

“The vital research and programs of the American Cancer Society are leading the way to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.  More funds raised translate into more lives saved” said event organizers.

One person who has participated since Relay first came to Douglas is Mrs. Rita Moreno.  She has participated with both Food City and the Moreno Family teams.  Each and every year Rita walks the entire 24 hours and has vowed to keep on walking.  Her spunk and determination have earned her the nicknames of Wonder Woman and the 24 hour Wonder.

“I feel honored to be a part of this uplifting event,” said Rita.  “I have made a personal commitment both to create awareness about the progress against cancer and help raise the funds necessary to continue the fight against the disease.”

Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones lost, fight back against a disease that takes too much, and raise money for the fight against cancer.

Relay for Life first started in May 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt took the first step of his 24-hour walk around a track in Tacoma, Washington raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society.
