BISBEE – The 139th meeting between the Bisbee Pumas and the Douglas Bulldogs ended in a rout as Douglas capitalized on the speed of Joel Bello to thump Bisbee 49-12 in the season opener for both teams Friday.

The game also marked the return of Dick Keith who remains unbeaten both as a coach and a player against the mining town rivals.

The win keeps the Copper Pick in Douglas for a third straight year. The last time Douglas played in Bisbee the Pumas came away with a 20-19 win.

Bello caught touchdown passes from CJ Teran and AJ Acosta and had a 92-yard kickoff return for a score

Douglas led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter and 22-6 at the half. Two third quarter scores gave the Bulldogs a 35-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs were hindered by numerous penalties. Stats from the game are not yet available but it is estimated Douglas had over 100-yards in penalties.

Keith said he was happy with the offensive play but admits he is bothered by the mistakes.

The Bulldogs, 1-0, will be off this coming Friday and will return to play Sept. 11 when they host Nogales.

" Footballs football! and for those people who think its not a ''contact'' sport it is and its a fight and we were not hitting the other Bisbee players. If you were on the field friday night and heard the things the Bisbee players said you would have a different concept of the game. This game is a mans game and we leave it all on the field once the game is over we shake hands and congratulate them for a good game and goodluck with their season, we dont hold the grudge, because we got another game to worry about the next week.. " Put this in perspective people it is Bisbee you beat. Bisbee! This was an equal rivalry many years ago, not anymore. Some elementary schools in Douglas have a larger enrollment than BHS. So before you guys go on about how great your team is beat a team that is your equal, and I'm not talking about a Rio Rico team that has only won a couple of times in the last few years. Next thing you know you will be playing Valley Union, Patagonia, etc... and be walking around like your all that for beating them. Bisbee!!!! "

" Great Game Congratulations Bulldogs!! But I must say that I was disappointed in the lack of good sportsmanship from the fans and the players. The shouts of obscenities and the fighting was an embarrassment. I know it is a rivalry, but when Bisbee shows more grace in losing then Douglas does in Winning something is very wrong. Of course there were crass actions on both sides, but Douglas won the prize in that competition as well and should not be proud of it. "

" No mention about Douglas resorting to their usual dirty tricks as Douglas always does. Punching Bisbee players is just part of the game huh? Typical. "

" What a great game. We are so proud of our kids. Great coaching and you could feel the enthusiasm, something I haven't seen for years. The kids are showing a true grit and passion for the game. They played with skill and pride. Friday nights are looking good! I also thought that the cheerleader singing the fight song was outstanding! Lots of school spirit. "
