Ken Cormier is back as coach and as an employee of the Douglas Unified School District.

At a special board meeting Sept. 1 Cormier was officially rehired as soccer coach and assigned a new position within the DUSD.

Cormier is now what is being called a “new teacher induction coach” which helps the 52 new teachers adjust to their role in the classroom.

Superintendent Earl Pettit said there were always plans to have two of these “coaches,” but summer funding only allowed for the hiring of one.

New Title I funding became available in August, allowing the district to offer the position to Cormier.

“I’m delighted to be back as soccer coach,” Cormier said. “I’m also excited about my new position. This will be a new experience for me. I looking forward to helping the new teachers adapt to their role as teachers.”

Cormier started work Sept. 2 and was still learning some of the responsibilities of his new position when the interview with the Douglas Dispatch was done

Cormier has taught only at the high school the last 20 plus years. Now with his new job he’ll be bouncing around from school to school assisting Jana Selchow, the programs coordinator.

“I’ll be meeting with new teachers, observing them and seeing how they’re adjusting in their first year of teaching,” he said. “The whole purpose of the program is to trying to retain as many good, new teachers as we can and cut down on the turnover.”

Cormier has been involved previously with personal training and development many years ago and some additional training on his part will need to take place.

Cormier’s resignation as head soccer coach stemmed from the fact he was not offered a teaching contract this year. He had retired from teaching two years ago and was working under the E.S.I. program. Teachers in that program basically work year to year with no guarantees they will have a job the following year. This past summer a new teacher was hired to take Cormier's spot in the business department at Douglas High School.

Cormier’s resignation garnered state wide press and loads of community support.

“It just overwhelmed me,” he said. “I know how busy peoples lives are and to take the time to genuinely get involved of working to find a solution is deeply appreciated. … It makes all the years of things I’ve tried to do here worthwhile.”

Cormier says this experience has also given him a new sense of appreciation for what he really loves to do and that’s coaching and teaching.

“Often times we take things for granted,” he said. “This experience has helped me develop a new sense of appreciation.”

Cormier has communicated with most of his players that he and his assistant coaches Alphonso Romero, Victor Ramos and volunteer assistant Carlos Duarte have returned to the team and that open field begins next week and practice for the defending state champs begins Nov.2.

Cormier says he has no hard feelings towards what has happened throughout the course of this ordeal.

“I’ve lived life long enough to understand things happen in life, some good, some bad and it's what you do with the bad that determine success,” he said. “Even going through this there was no feelings of ill will towards anyone. … There was disappointment. I’ve always believed God doesn’t close one door without opening another. … I’m just so delighted that the door that opened allowed me to stay in this district and continue coaching these kids.”

Oh... the Dispatch is still a JOKE!! "

" I wish you were not so right about the federal agents not wanting to live here. It would be great if they did, it would help our tax base immensely. Secondly, I remember reading that Douglas beat Buena last year in soccer, I think you beat us to, I don't remember. Either way, you are right we don't play the same competition as you do. You guys play tough team especially in state. My understanding is that if Douglas wanted to move up divisions they could, but it would not benifit them to do so. You can't fault the kids or the coach for playing who they play, are they supposed to not win becuase it is a lesser division? I don't know much about Douglas soccer before the division shake up, but how did we do before this? Were there any state titles? What were the records? It would be interesting to see and compare how much of an effect the move made. Perhaps Buena would do better if they moved down divisions like us. Either way though, move up divisions is both wrong and right. As far as Cormier, how about we just drop the whole thing. It is over, good luck to all Douglas sports teams. "

As for playing real schools I think Douglas whipped on Buena in soccer on their way to a championship. Look up the record between the 2 schools (head to head) the last couple of years and eat some crow! "

" Cormier is a wonderful man and a fantastic coach!! I am glad he is back. Many students wish he was still involved with teaching their classes. The Board rehired him because they recognize what an asset he is to DUSD and the community.
And to move up divisions: Hasn't Doulas beat Buena in Soccer? I think so!!
And for the reasons the Feds don't want to live in Douglas... it is because the local cops don't put up with their drunken, brawling, speeding around, and holier than thou attitude. No one is above the law in Douglas. There is a new Chief in town!! "

" Obviously Whetten and Blasky don't read the blogs, if they did they would realize what an insult they are to journalism. We need a new management in town for the Dispatch, Blasky uses the paper to push his personal agenda "Cormier." Whetten is just as guilty. It would be refreshing to get some quality reporting and not these two dummies who are a poor excuse for reporting. Blasky if you only knew how little people think of you, I bet a high school student could produce a much better newspaper, in fact it is well known when you don't like someone you make it your business to USE the paper to cloud the issues. Cormier on the front page, give me a break, you and Whetten stink. So let the old man coach but thank goodness he's not a teacher, and the new job oh yeah he'll be great at teaching new teachers how to read the paper with a cup of coffee on the job while trying to recruit players from Mexico , my kids have said as much. What a waste of taxpayer money. He should stay retired. And isn't funny how the Cormier kids get the publicity for cross country when they do not even attend DHS. They have no right to wear a DHS uniform when they do not go there that's a false representation. But then again Blasky and Whetten are in love with the Cormiers...for whatever reason. "

" Thank you for your thought provoking comment. Ensure though that you check your facts before you post them. There are federal personnel that do live in Douglas and the surrounding area. It is true that Douglas is in a lower division than those of you in Sierra Vista. This is by rules due to the population of students that attend each of our schools. Oh by the way when was the last time that Sierra Vista won any championship in their league? I have never seen their name there. Again make sure you check your facts before you begin attacking another city. lol "

No one else would be able to get as much coverage as he, or maybe Whetton has a thing going with him because it sure is funny how he manages to get front page news or maybe he'll donate to their reitrement fund since he is making big bucks now. "

Insulting wrote on Sep 11, 2009 1:07 PM:

" It is insulting that the so called " newspaper" continues to give headline space to an issue that is so unimportant such as whether Cormier has a job or not. Blasky and Whetton you have managed to give this man the importance that smells of cronyism. You should be ashamed of yourselves. You are an insult to the media. Cormier is an old man who chose to retire and thought he was entitled to keep his job simply because he was a coach. Good for DHS not wanting him as a teacher. I don't blame them. The headline space should have been devoted to reaction to the President's speech in schools or anything that would be of value to the public. What a disservice to the community . The Dispacth needs a new management, this one can't tell the difference between true journalism and tabloid garbage, "

" Education is suppose to be first and he was not the best qualified so he did not get the job, so what have we all learned? You do not have to have a good work ethic but whine like a baby and claim foul but face it you were outclassed and could not handle the truth, how can the students face you with respect, a real man would not do this. Your nothing but a whinner and a bad excuse for a man, hope your own kids (family) can respect you, your a sad excuse for a honorable profession. "

I hope he teaches the new teachers how to whine like a baby, throw a tantrum, how to resign his coaching position and get it back and pretend that it is all about the kids! It is magical how he does it. I am one impressed colleague.

Ken Cormier, all I have to say, is you have to look yourself in the mirror every morning.... Karma. "

Unbelievable wrote on Sep 10, 2009 9:26 AM:

" "Cormier’s resignation garnered state wide press and loads of community support." - Really? State wide press is an exaggeration to say the least. The AZ Star (after being contacted by Cormier) and the Dispatch are not Statewide but glad they think they are.

What lesson has been learned here? Whine and you get your way? It is a sad state of affairs when someone uses their position as the head coach to get their way? Since when does a person who rresign their job as head coach get their job back? Did he interview? My understanding is that interviews took place and an offer was made to new teacher in the district? If this is true, why would the new teacher want to stay in a corrupt district such as this. I for one will fulfill my contract, as any honorable person would do, and move on. I will no longer put up with the sad state of affairs.

Cormier states he loves to coach? Why did you retire? Well, at least now Douglas will start recruiting ids agao nfrom AP to play soccer. "

Seriously your paper's top story was about that same guy for like a month in a row.Ha Ha I'm glad I left. Just be glad you guys don't have to play real schools like us here in Sierra Vista. Because everyone knows that a 4AII championship is comparable to a Triple AAA title, nobody cares. "

The Board fell to their knees and allowed Cormier to get his way. This is a joke. Cormier is a joke and so is the Board! "
