Webster’s defines the word survivor as “one who has overcome”. The American Cancer Society defines survivor “as anyone who has ever heard the words ‘you have cancer’”. From that point on, the lives of these people change drastically. At Relay for Life, survivors are honored guests who come together to see the commitment of complete strangers who quickly become friends for life and members of an extended “Relay Family”.

These survivors and their caregivers come to Relay looking for hope. Each year more and more survivors join us. In speaking with these courageous people, Relayer’s can visibly see the progress ACE has made through years of dedicated research.
As night falls, the ever emotional Luminaria ceremony begins. Hundreds of luminiarias line the track as names are read of those who have stared the cancer beast in the eyes and made it blink, as well as those who fought a valiant battle but lost.
Relay For Life is growing across the nation. This year more than 5,000 events will be held in 20 countries. In the United States more than 3 million Americans including 500,000 survivors are expected to participate.
All cancer survivors are invited to gather with participants and caregivers at the Copper King Baseball Stadium on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 10:00 A.M. to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Douglas.
Over the course of 15 years, the Relay for Life of Douglas has raised over $200,000.00 for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.
Relay For Life helps a community celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.
If you are a survivor or know of a survivor who would like to participate, please call (520) 234-7821 or visit www.relayforlife.org/douglasaz
