Bundles of marijuana concealed in furniture at Douglas POE

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers stopped a marijuana smuggling attempt when they seized $348,000 of marijuana concealed in furniture.


More than 200 pounds of marijuana was concealed in furniture an El Paso man attempted to cross at the Douglas Port of Enttry.

On Wednesday, September 16, about 6:36  p.m. CBP Officers became suspicious of a 2002 Chevy 1500 Pick-up that was carrying new furniture. The Pick-up was being driven by a 20-year-old man from El  Paso, Texas.  

CBP Officers searched the vehicle with a specialized k-9 Team and discovered packages concealed in the base of the furniture.  CBP Officers seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $ 348,000.

CBP Officers seized the vehicle and marijuana. The El Paso man was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for questioning.   

The Office of Field Operations is responsible for securing our borders at the ports of entry.  U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers’ primary mission is anti-terrorism; they screen all people, vehicles, and goods entering the United States, while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel into and out of the United States.   Their mission also includes carrying out traditional border-related responsibilities, including narcotics interdiction, enforcing immigration law, protecting the nation’s food supply and agriculture industry from pests and diseases, and enforcing trade laws.
