AARP Tax-Aide program needs volunteers

AARP Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service is looking for volunteers to be local site greeters, tax preparers and/or to take on leadership positions.  In 2009, between February 1 and April 15, over 90 sites in Arizona provided assistance to over 44,000 taxpayers.

“I have been a greeter at our site for five years.  It is a wonderful opportunity to meet taxpayers who are seeking our services.  They are so appreciative of our services they return year after year,” said Earl Grey, AARP Arizona Tax-Aide Volunteer.   “I usually work once a week for three to four hours passing out site sign-in sheets and materials for the taxpayers to complete.  It is so rewarding to see the smiles as they are leaving our site.”

Leadership positions are also available.  Leaders coordinate program delivery at local sites and manage specific program activities such as technology, training, administration or communication at the state or regional level.

Although tax training and certification is encouraged, it is not required for many leadership positions. Volunteers are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses. “This year, we are particularly in need of Hispanic translators at our local sites,” said Diane Pearson, AARP Arizona Tax-Aide State Coordinator.  “We have had to turn away taxpayers due to the shortage of personnel who are bilingual.  Our goal this year is to have at least one translator available once a week to assist at each of our sites.”
