DUSD Board under state spotlight

Termination proceedings,  or lack of them, has put the Douglas Unified School District  Governing Board under the glare of the state media since its last meeting.

KVOA (Channel 4) and KGUN (Channel 9), both out of Tucson, have been in Douglas in recent days to investigate the termination process of Superintendent Earl Pettit.

It has been a series of no comments from various board members, until Board member Susan Kramer, who voted against the termination, reportedly told the station she did not understand why Pettit was being terminated.

In a brief interview with Board president Charles Hoyack, the Dispatch was told that the district is still in  the process of hiring a private investigator to review the situation, and said they are moving ahead.

There is no timeline on the hiring of the investigator, and the person in charge of doing so is Kramer.

Last week, the board voted to hire an investigator and put off issuing charges to Pettit until that investigation was completed.

Pettit remains at Central Administration as Superintendent as of presstime.

You sure like cutting everyone down. Take a look at youself. Speaking of uneducated....you can't even write a complete sentence. You sure as heck didn't come out of my class!I work in Douglas because I love Douglas, not because I can't get a job anywhere else!
Mr. Pettit is doing a good job and many people are supporting him. So, shut your big mouth and quit cutting all the teachers and city employees down. They don't all fall into your category. You are the one that is uneducated. It should be "anywhere else",oh, wait use your spell checker! You ding dong!!! "

" The issues that Petit has with Stevenson are because the majority of Stevenson' parents are educated and question things. Petit wants to be a Dictator and have the ultimate power. This only works when people are undereducated. For those of you who want change just for the sake of change have to realize that everything has its good sides and its negative sides. These have to be weighed before determining which route to take. To do that, all of the facts must be disclosed. We have learned with Petit that the only facts discosed are the portions of ones that he wants out in the public. There is much more to the truth and we must ask questions until we get the truth. When someone can't be fully truthful, it is hard to trust anything they say. "

" At a minimum this certainly represents completely unprofessional behavior on the part of the school board and its leader. It certainly seems like a case of petty school politics that have gone too far. Earl Pettit has improved many of the results in the DUSD school district in a short period of time. The community needs to be speaking out against Hoyack and his board in their meetings and in person, and supporting Pettit. Why in the world is the district paying our money to dig up dirt on their superintendent. At least when most politicians do this, they do it discretely, but never in my wildest dreams would I believe one of our public servants would propose firing someone without giving a cause, and then after the fact hire a PI to try to find the cause. My biggest concern is that with such assinine HR practices in the DUSD, Pettit will have cause for another lawsuit, probably defamation, and walk away with a multi-million dollar settlement from the district - money that should be used for educating our kids. Hoyak should have spent the money on someone who can teach him to be an effective leader and manager and we would be better served. "

" Chuck Hoyack isn't exactly the type of person that should be labeled the Head of School Board. Just seeing his face, and the way he works with people make me laugh at the fact that this school district ALLOWS a spoiled little child to have control over all this. The things I'd love to tell Mr Hoyack cannot be said on here. I'll leave it to the hardcore political folk that want to dig deeper into this B.S. Pettit did nothing wrong, what happened in the past, happened in the past....we need to think of our future, and Hoyack is holding up the education process for my kid. I've NEVER had an issue with Pettit, nor the way he runs our schools. NOT ONE COMPLAINT......the only complaining I hear is coming from chuck, 5 - 10 people around town...all of which are his "friends". Hoyack, if YOU dont like our district: YOU MOVE OUT....nobody wants you here anyways. With the exception of the a couple board members, along with those board members friends n family.....now THERE is a solid army. Hoyack is like George Bush....he does what he does, because he can.....not because there is a reason....spoiled little brat!!!! "

" This is a joke. I went to school in Douglas, had Chuck Hoyack as my History instructor at Cochise College. Notice I didn't say professor because he was far from one! The lack of professionalism on the part of the school board is embarrassing. If the board wants to fire him, fine a good reason to do so! Do do it only because he crossed paths with Hoyack's wife at Stevenson.

It is so sad to see that the DUSD has become the joke of the state. Spend that money on making the district better, improving AIMS score and helping the kids make something for themselves! "

" if you want to understand the situation, you have to understand the culture of the little town. Most people employeed by the school district are, like the city of douglas, because they can't get a job nowhere else, or they just can't or don't want to leave douglas. therefore they are there as a mafia. all they have to do is keep their jobs, because they have no hope for more. anybody like petitte that wants to change things or improve education is the enemy. uneducated residents are easy to manipulate, and so everything is fine under the douglas sun. get rid of petitte and hire someone locally, the problem is that if you hire an outside person, you can blame him/her for anything and keep hiring more, but if you hire a local one, conflicts will happen. why doesn't one of the board takes the position? "

I know Rivera is dumb, but if he did as Channel 9 says he did he ought to be run out of town on a rail!
Where are the real leaders in this town? Do we have any?
    HELP. "

" We are the ignorant ones. We let Hoyack play these ridiculous games. We should have recalled him months ago. However, we are afraid and that's why we are led around like sheep. Chuck is Tricky Dicky of the scandal Stevensongate. All we are doing in Douglas is regenerating ignorance because nothing changes here. This is job security for Hoyack. Continuing to offer a substandard education to Douglas students keeps Cochise College in business teaching an abundance of remedial courses. Please resign form the board Mr. Hoyack, Mrs Lopez, and Mr. Rivera because your decsions should be based on the best interest of students not on personal agendas. Try reading the policy manual. Don't blame Kramer for this. There no need for further investigation.

    Hey Old Owl,
Stop pointing fingers. Use your wisdom to lead voters towards a belief that they have the power to make positive changes in their community. Anyone whose ever been in a Union knows that an Association is only as strong as its members. DUSD employees do not stand up for themselves. They are a reflection of a the above mentioned populace (followers.)
The the DEA leader does not reside here. So it's our (Douglas citizens)responsibility to rectify this stupid waste of tax payer's money. Get back to the business of preparing our youth for the global economy & a chance for a successful life outside of a small-minded environment. "

As usual, it's more profitable to look the other way, than to take action. I guess they don't notice the Sonora plates on these vehicles, as they drive by and drop off the student's. Before we know it, they'll be selling Sonora plates with our school logos as fundraisers. But, mi liv hir n Doglas..... "

    Now that's professionalism, Chuck! "

" It's not enough that we in this town are against each other, pretty much like the time the PD strike was going on, friendships ended, families stopped speaking to each other because of the side you took on,and it took a long time for those wounds to heal. But now we are back to those hateful times and in this time of media frenzy our hatefulness, anger, and everything else is there for everyone to see how small minded we are in Douglas. This was a good town until one person came in trying to change the status quo in our schools. I blame the incredible hard headed stupidity of two adults, Pettit and Hoyack. Let's clean house and not continue to allow the media to make us look so terrible. It is truly sad that we are the laughing stock of the state. "

" The circus continues. Why is Kramer a board member if we are asking questions? Why has she not gotten busy with hiring an investigator so we can get this circus over with? Why is Petitt telling district employees NOT to talk to press when he himself spoke on his side of the issue? Seems to me the board (Ms. Kramer) should keep their mouths shut until this whole things is investigated and not make a comment. Also seems to me that Petitt should not be allowed to speak in regards to his side when he is still the so called leader of the district. What a joke this has become. It is truly amazing to see the stupidity of people when cameras are around. Yes, that means you also Estrada. "
