On Sunday, October 4, at approximately 8:00 pm, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office began receiving several 9-1-1 calls related to an accident that had just occurred where multiple people were injured.  The calls were from Hispanic male subjects who did not speak English and who did not know where they were at.

Each caller advised that they had crossed the United States/Mexico border and could see the lights of Benson.  The callers were not able to provide enough detail to immediately locate them, and various agencies assisted to include the Douglas Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Approximately one hour later another caller advised that he had come across a pick up truck that had rolled over and there were several injured men around the vehicle on Dragoon Ranch Road three miles east of Sibyl Road.  Deputies and medical personnel responded to the scene which was located east of Benson off of Dragoon Ranch and Sybil roads.  The vehicle, a 1988 GMC 4x4 pick up truck, was totaled and several male subjects were around the scene. Deputies located one Hispanic male subject who medics advised was deceased and four additional Hispanic male subjects who were injured.  Two of the injured were transported to the Benson Hospital and the remaining two were transported to University Medical Center in Tucson.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety advised that they had made contact with three male subjects approximate mile post 316 on Interstate 10 where they had walked to after the accident, and United States Border Patrol agents advised that they had made contact with a group of four male subjects a short distance away.  The total count for subject in the vehicle was 15 and interviews with some members of the group advised that the vehicle rolled over and all subject were ejected, including the driver.  U.S. Border Patrol agents took custody and the non injured subjects and the Mexican Consulate was advised of the accident and fatality.

The Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Team responded to the area and the investigation is being continued by them.
