A 61-year-old Douglas man is currently in stable condition at University Medical Center in Tucson after being shot in the abdomen during the course of a fight, believed to be gang-related.

According to Mark Gonzalez of the Douglas Police Dept. on Oct. 15 at approximately 10 p.m., Douglas Police responded to the intersection of 15th St. and E Avenue regarding a fight in progress with possible shots fired.

“Upon arrival, police found a 61-year-old man sitting on the curbside of the street,” Gonzalez said. “Police discovered that the man had been shot in the abdomen with a small caliber handgun.”

The man, who is not being identified, was conscious, alert, and oriented, and was subsequently transported by helicopter to University Medical Center for treatment of his wound.

“The shooting occurred at 650 15th St., where the man resides with two male juveniles, one of them his son,” Gonzalez said. “It is unclear at this time whether the victim was part of the fight or was attempting to stop the fight when the shooting occurred.”

Douglas Police detectives are investigating the shooting and believe the shooting is gang-related, but cannot confirm that at this time.

Detectives have developed several leads in the case, and the investigation is continuing.

" I agree with the previous comments. I grew up in town. Nonsense to make this incident a mystery> "

" Yes, the man is absolutely not 61 and he lives with his wife and family at the address, not with just two juveniles. This type of reporting is typical of the Douglas Dispatch because of information received from other than first person sources. Also, the man was not involved in the fight. He was a victim and thankfully survived the gun shot. And last, for sure, nothing will come from the investigation unless the weapon is found. "

" First of all the man is not 61. Whoever wrote this story needs to get their story straight. "

" Come on now. what kind of shoddy journalism is this? What is the victim's name? Douglas is a small town, I know a ton of people must know the 61-year-old man. There are other ways to gather information than from "officials." Talk to neighbors, witnesses, get an official to talk off the record. Just do your job. "
