The Douglas High School golf team knocked off Marana 171-198 in a dual meet Monday at the Douglas Golf Course.

Bruce Whetten / Douglas Dispatch Paul Vertrees tees off the 17th hole on the back nine of the Douglas Golf Course Monday. Vertrees shot a 43 as the Bulldogs beat Marana 171-198.

Gabriel Ortega led the Bulldogs shooting a team low of 39. Erich Hernandez and Paul Vertrees each followed with scores of 43, Martin Valenzuela followed with a 46, Liz Clark shot a 50 and Ernie Tapia a 53.

Douglas’ golf coach Bosco Selchow said his team is playing fairly well right now and to be able to shoot a score in the 170 range on the back nine holes of the Douglas course is good.

“It was kind of windy today and a little wet from the rain we had over the weekend,” he said. “But all in all I thought we did okay.”

The coach said his team continues to play well at home and not so well on the road.

“We’re not making the adjustments we need to when we go play at other courses,” he said.

The coach said Ortega continues to play well for Douglas and has led the team in scoring five of the last six matches.

“He’s been very consistent,” the coach said. “I’m not surprised. He’s worked hard all summer and he has his game in order.”

Selchow said his other golfers have up and down days.

“What we’re doing right now is really not all that important,” he said.

The Bulldogs have just four more matches and two invitationals before the regional tournament.

Douglas has beaten every team in its region except Sahuarita who beat Douglas by two strokes several weeks ago in Saharita.
