TUCSON – The Douglas High School cross country teams each won a quadrangular meet last week at Desert View High School.

Chelsey Luker of Desert View was the overall winner finishing with a time of 22:51.
Melia Skinner was second with a time of 23:09; Leilani Skinner third with a 23:27; Kayla Fields shot up to finish in eighth place posting a time of 23:27. Kim Cormier placed ninth with a 25:49 and Kristi Cormier 10th with a 25:53. Jaqueline Hernandez finished in 11th place posting a time of 26:14 and Jazmin Selig was 14th turning in a time of 30:12.
Douglas’ cross country coach David Bond said since two of the three schools his team was running against was 4A schools this was a good confidence win for his team.
The coach said his team did a good job of running as a pack for most of the race spreading out towards the end.
In the boy’s race Douglas won the meet with 34 points, Pueblo was second with 40 points, Desert View third with 73 and San Miguel did not score having just two runners.
Luis Martinez had another impressive race for Douglas finishing first overall with a time of 19:14.
“Martinez ran neck and neck with one of the San Miguel runners,” Bond said. “These two were well ahead of the other runners the entire race. Luis out kicked his competition about 400 meters from the finish.”
Kenny Cardenas followed finishing fifth overall for Douglas with a time of 20:49; Robert Coronado was seventh with a 21:16; Michael Castro placed 10th with a 21:58; Alfonso Mejia 11th with a 22:01; Ricky Larez 12th with a 22:04; Andre Olivas 18th, 23:03; Thomas Fredrickson 21st, 25:33; Keyon Young 25th, 30:17 and Andy Madrid 27th, 32:51.
Coach Bond said Cardenas ran one of his better races and Coronado, a senior, ran his first race of the season which helped Douglas’ score.
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are off until this Saturday when they run at the Old Pueblo Invitational which will be held at Santa Rita High School.
Coach Bond said this race pits freshmen vs. freshmen, sophomores vs. sophomores, juniors vs. juniors and seniors vs. seniors.
