Urquijo had seven assists, a block and two aces for Douglas. Tapia had two assists and four digs; Campbell six kills, three blocks and a dig. Chavez had two blocks, a kill and a dig; Mariscal three digs, a kill and a block and Lara had a kill and an ace.

“With this game we knew that we were facing one of the top teams

in our conference,” Coach Lorena Tapia said. “But when we give up even before we step on the court is something that I don't have control over.”

Tapia said Douglas’ game against Catalina was similar to Amphi.

“The girls need to be able to come in focused and ready to play,” she said. “Our mental game and defensive set back was the cause for tonight’s loss.”

Douglas, 4-3 overall, 1-3 in conference, is back on the road Thursday taking on Sahuarita in Sahuarita.

Junior varsity

The Douglas JV’s improved to 6-1 last week picking up wins over both Catalina and Amphi.

Douglas defeated Catalina 25-15, 15-25 and 15-11 after beating Amphi two days earlier 25-22, 19-25 and 15-9.

Against Catalina Carley Acosta had four digs, three kills and three aces; Kayla Vasquez 10 assists and a dig; Roxanna Valenzuela four assists and an ace. Douglas’ coach Carlos Chavez said it was a good week for his team.

“These girls are really playing well right now,” he said.

Against Catalina everyone on team was able to get some quality playing time which helps team chemistry.

Against Amphi the coach said his teams’ serving was “awesome” and the offensive attack was solid.

“I’m very proud of these girls,” he said.

Freshmen

The Douglas freshmen volleyball team fell to Catalina and Amphi last week losing 18-25, 18-25 to Catalina and 15-25, 17-25 to Amphi.

Luz Campas had two kills for Douglas in the loss to Catalina, Kianna Ross and Jennifer Montoya had two kills and one kill respectively in the loss to Amphi.

Douglas’ freshman coach Jill DeRoche said against Amphi her girls did not show up to play.

“Amphi was a good team and we gave them too many opportunities,” she said. “We need to work on fighting for each point, and continue to develop our fundamentals. We will be working hard at practice to prepare ourselves for our upcoming games.”

Against Catalina the coach said her team had an excellent practice on Wednesday and she thought her girls did well with their execution.

“Our passing is getting better, and we just need some of the girls to step up and hit,” she said. “I am encouraged by the progress that we are making. We need to continue to stay focused and relaxed.”

" It's the same with all sports in Douglas High School out of 1300+ students it the same 200 that try to make up all our teams. But you don't see the players never going to practice, they don't work hard to get better, not making the grades. Coaches never knows what team is showing up on game day!! It's so easy to blame the coach. "

" Whose responsible for having the team prepared when they step on the court? Maybe you should give some of the athletes that go to practice, work hard, but sit on the bench a chance to play if your "super stars" aren't getting it done. Maybe if they have to work hard for playing time they will step on the court ready to play. "

" everyone seems so surprised. Coach Tapia has done nothing for the program or the girls. She's been there for one reason and one reason only!!!!!!!!!!!!Bet she leaves after this season. Any takers. "

" I agree. Same for the Chavez', they are only in it for their kid. Any A.D. should be able to see this. It is not fair to the harder working more talented athletes that better not say a word or else. This goes for volleyball, soccer and softball. "

" “But when we give up even before we step on the court is something that I don't have control over.” This is your team coach, if you have no control over it why are you trying to coach! If they give up before they step on the court that says a lot about your program and especially you. This is the same sad story we hear year after year. The season starts and you beat some cupcakes and your team is the best you've ever had that will go a long way. Once you start playing teams that are decent, losses pile up and suddenly the girls have no desire, unity and according to your quote no GUTS. It is time you see the writing on the wall. If the team falls apart year after year and doesn't follow your motivation (ha ha) give it up. Wake up AD and lead this program in the right direction by hiring a COACH. One that coaches a program, not a select few. Most importantly, one that looks in the mirror and doesn't use the team excuse year after year. One that realizes when it's time to say "I have no clue what I'm doing, I'm outta here". "
