DHS swimmers land 8 region champions

TUCSON - The Douglas High School swim teams had a very successful Gila Regional meet this past weekend having eight swimmers land region championships.

Both DHS swim teams recorded their highest finishes ever at the regional meet. The Bulldog swimmers came in second place behind Santa Rita while the girls placed third behind Santa Rita and Palo Verde.

In the boys meet Santa Rita finished with 385 points while Douglas was second with 326, Palo Verde was third with 244 points and Amphi fourth with 203.

The Bulldogs 200 individual medley relay team of Antonio Pena, Brandon Young, Rodrigo Salcido and Daniel Marines became Douglas’ first region champions of the meet finishing with a winning time of 1:55.18.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Tony Young, Rodrigo Martinez, Pena and Brandon Young came in second with a time of 4:02.36.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Marines, Martinez, George Watkins and Tony Young came in third with a time of 1:54.74.

In the individual events Brandon Young won the Gila Regional championship in the 200 individual medley posting a time of 2:13.07. He also won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.56 while Marines was fourth with a 1:18.21 and Tristen Luna seventh with a 1:23.27.

Salcido also won the regional championship in the 100 butterfly posting a time of 1:03.97. Martinez was sixth in the event with a 1:17.87.

In the 100 backstroke Pena and Martinez placed second and fifth turning in times of 1:06.04 and 1:16.49.

Pena placed fifth in the 200 freestyle turning in a time of 2:13.51.

In the 100 freestyle Salcido came in second with a time of 54.47; Tony Young was ninth with a 1:05.46; Watkins 10th with a 1:07.16 and DJ Campas 13th with a 1:12.03.

In the 50 freestyle Marines finished fifth with a 26.35; Tony Young 10th with a 28.56; Watkins 11th with a 29.08 and Adam Barela 15th with a 29.08.

In the girls meet Santa Rita finished with 398 points, Palo Verde was second with 381 and Douglas third with 346.

Douglas’ 200 freestyle relay team Carolyne Miller, Catherine Gallardo, Samantha Sawyer and Samantha Cardenas came in first with a time of 1:53.75.

The 200 medley relay team of Cardenas, Frances Young, Sawyer and Miller finished second with a 2:11.34.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Gallardo, Young, Rianne McBride and Sawyer also came in second posting a time of 4:45.67.

In the individual events, Cardenas came in first in the 200 individual medley posting a time of 2:34.97. Young was third with a 2:55.33.

Cardenas also won the regional title in the 100 backstroke finishing with a time of 1:07.39. Gallardo was fourth with a 1:17.48.

In the 100 breaststroke event Amanda Ames and Young finished fifth and sixth posting times of 1:29.68 and 1:29.70.

McBride and Kim Fragoso were fifth and sixth in the 200 freestyle recording times of 2:43.35 and 2:47.62.

In the 100 butterfly Sawyer came in second and Fragoso ninth with times of 1:11.26 and 1:24.92.

In the 50 freestyle event Miller placed second with a 27.93; Ames third with a 29.48 and Katyna Rembis 13th with a time of 43.24 seconds.

In the 100 freestyle event Miller finished in third place with a 1:03.29; Gallardo fourth with a 1:05.75; McBride fifth with a 1:12.04 and Ana Sofia Fimbres 12th with a 1:21.85.

Douglas’ swim coach Michelle Cardenas said she was very pleased with how her teams performed this past weekend.

“I was very happy with the effort,” she said. “I think we all agree we have a little more fine tuning to do before state.”

Cardenas is taking 14 swimmers to the state meet this weekend in Mesa.

The coach said she’s very excited to see how her teams match up compared to the rest of the schools.

Brandon Young is currently ranked second in the state in the breaststroke and fifth in the state in the individual medley.
