Portal Oktoberfest kicks off on Oct. 24

The Portal Oktoberfest begins at 9 a.m. Arizona time on Saturday, October 24,  by the post office and library.

Until 1:00 PM, you may browser tables of  books and DVDs, choose from home-baked goodies, including casseroles for your freezer, admire Orchid Davis’s wood etchings, and find treasures at the Silent Auction.  Gerry Hernbrode, 558-2330, will still accept additions to her mounting array of tents, vases, paintings, rugs, crystal ware  and other  handsome or useful things.

After a Believe-it-or-not historical tour of  the village with Howard Topoff, have lunch under the giant sycamores . Bratwurst with two delicious side dishes cost  only $5, or have some home-made tamales from the church ladies of San Felipe de Neri. They will  have both meat and vegetarian tamales for sale to take home as well as devour on the spot.  A new feature from the grill will be veggie dogs.

Warm thanks to the Douglas Safeway whose manager generously gave a cash donation and a discount on  the food, which adds considerably to the profits that go to  Sew What  scholarships and nursing home projects.
