Douglas’ swim coach Michelle Cardenas said words cannot describe how happy she is with her swimmers performance later on this month.
“Our goal was to get Brandon on the (awards) podium and we got him on there twice,” she said. “We had a handful of athletes make it to the A Finals which was a surprise to us. We would have been happy with them making it to the B Finals.”
Cardenas believes DHS swimming is on the rise and she is hoping next year to increase the size of the team allowing it to have some more depth.
“Our team already has some quality swimmers now we need quantity and hopefully with that quantity we can get more quality,” she said. “We’re working on building the team more and more every year.”
Cardenas says she is happy Young was able to win state.
“He’s put in a lot of time to get to this point,” she said. “We’re hoping to use him to promote the team.”
Cardenas said she plans on taking Young and her daughter Samantha, a region champion as well, to the schools in an effort to promote their sport.
“The future looks very bright,” she said. “It’s only going to get better.”
The DHS swimmers will be honored at a post season awards banquet later this month.
