Lopez blasts KVOA for misleading report

Douglas High School Principal Bonnie Lopez criticized KVOA for its use of Douglas High School as a backdrop for a story on smuggling.

Lopez spoke during the Call to the Public section of the regular board meeting on November 3.

The piece, which also featured shots of DHS students and an interview with Superintendent Earl Pettit, was run by the Tucson station on Monday, November 2.

“It is not easy to be responsible for 1,400 students.  It is a big job in many respects filled with countless challenges on a daily basis,” she said.

“What is easy is to stand here and rectify a misrepresentation of facts that unfairly targeted my students.

“ Last night KVOA Channel 4 aired a story titled “Smuggling Teens”.  The story was based on teens that had been caught and arrested smuggling drugs.  As the reporter filmed her story she did so using Douglas High School as a backdrop, and taped our students leaving campus.  Let me set the record straight, the teens arrested were not Douglas High School students.  I stand here because this story was unfair to the hundreds of DHS students who are doing their best – from the cover of the sports section in the Daily Star, to those who give countless hours on weekends to help at the orphanage in Agua Prieta, to the students who have made our Drop Out Prevention Program worthy of receiving a state award as exemplary.

“It is for them, my teachers, and our parents that I stand here, I could not do otherwise, and while we are not perfect – we do believe in the pride that many before who walked the halls of DHS left as their legacy.

“I am Bonnier Lopez Principal of DHS and although KVOA claims their mantra is to report “Fair and Balanced news” sadly it was not the case this time.”

" I find it remarkable that the principal has to fix another mistake that Mr. Pettit once again. Maybe the "Open door policy" should be rethought? I know this is not the only problem that has come from this policy. People are getting tired of fixing and covering up the decisions that are made by the superintendent. Come on school board get rid of him or at least don’t renew his contract! It is time to hire a Superintendent that has some guts (for lack of a better word) that will stand up to people and make the right decisions. PLEASE! "

" I agree with you. There have been many stories that used another school as a backdrop for their topic. I also understand the annoyance of people not wanting people to think that it was DHS. I also agree that there is a drug problem at that school and also the junior high schools. It is a hard thing to control and needs more attention in my opinion. It is bad when I as a staff member have seen a small baggie with a white residue in it beside the boys’ restroom. The problem is dealt with when students have drugs, and during the hearing with administration they should expel that student. If there is a no tolerance policy then there should BE a zero tolerance policy. It is a problem that the staff will be watchful and the great administration currently fights. "

" Not only can you not spell you can't read. The story indicated DHS is not perfect but the perception the way the report was done was to implicate Douglas High students. Which was the whole idea the way the news presented it. And no it was not Lorraine Rivera, and we cannot think she is responsible for all of Channel 4 stories. She is an anchor and we are very proud of her. As for the blinders Douglas Citizen they do not exist! "

" Lorraine Rivera is a ANCHOR. She's not a reporter or editor. You can not place the responsibility of every Douglas story on her. That's unfair. She's done an excellent job representing her community! I'm proud to know that she is from Douglas and has worked hard to follow her dreams. She sets an awesome example for our youth. "

" I don't know what the problem is. So the teens that got arrested that led to this piece were not DHS students, this time. If you believe that DHS students aren't being arrested for smuggling narcotics at the Port of Entry and also in the interior, you've got your blinders own tight!

    Good Job Lorraine! "

" Wow what a gutsy lady! She stood up for our kids in the face of the Board and media. Douglas is always labeled with so may incorrect assummptions because we are on the Border. Finally Bonnie Lopez stood up to this and set it straight. What we all in our family were perplexed about is that the Superintendent did not ever defend our kids in his interview. Why didn't HE set the record straight. He is so starved for publicity he didn't think to stand up for our community. There's no doubt his interests are somewhere else. That is NOT leadership. Bonnie Lopez for Superintendent!!!!! "

" Does it seem odd to anyone else that Douglas's own Lorraine Rivera is a KVOA reporter?

Nice representation of your hometown Lorraine. Way to make Douglas proud. "
