City council hopefuls can begin picking up packets Nov. 9

The 2010 Douglas Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, to nominate Council members for Wards 2, 4, and 6.  Candidate packets will be available for distribution at the City Clerk’s Office on November 9, 2009, and must be returned by December 9, 2009, at 5:00 p.m.


Council Member Mitch Lindemann -Ward 2, Council Member Ray Shelton – Ward 4, and Council Member Louie Acedo – Ward 6, according to City Charter, are eligible to serve an additional 4-year term.  All three incumbents have expressed an interest in running for reelection. 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR COUNCIL MEMBERS:

Council members shall be qualified electors of the City, at least twenty-one years of age, and shall hold no other elected public office for which they receive compensation.  A Council member shall have physically resided in the City of Douglas for at least three years next preceding the date of such election in addition to have physically resided within the ward from which he stands for election or appointment for at least one year preceding the election or appointment.

Filing of Nomination Petitions:    December 9, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.

Voter registration closes:                      February 8, 2010

Primary Election Day:                          March 9, 2010

Polls Open/Close                                   6:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

General Election (if required)    May 18, 2010

In order for your signature to count on a ward candidate nomination petition, you must be registered to vote in that ward.  Please remember to change your registration if you have changed your address. 

To be eligible to vote in a City election, you must be at least 18 years old, be registered to vote in Cochise County and a resident of the City at least 29 days prior to the election. 

Voter registration forms are available at City Hall in the City Clerk’s Office located at 425 Tenth Street, the Douglas Public Library at 560 E. Tenth Street, Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) at 2050 N. Highway 191, U.S. Post Office at 601 Tenth Street, and County Government Offices.

An Arizona Voter Registration form can be printed from the internet or you may also register online by visiting the Arizona Secretary of State Website, www.azsos.gov – elections, voter information, register to vote.  For additional information about voter registration, or to verify your current registration, contact the Cochise County Recorders Office at (520) 432-8354.

Your voter registration card identifies the ward in which you are registered.  Ward boundary maps are available at the Clerk’s office.
