Sabal no longer involved in recall of Gomez

Natalio Sabal, who took out recall petitions against Douglas Mayor Dr. Michael Gomez several months ago, officially announced he can no longer be involved in that effort.

In a letter to Douglas City Clerk Brenda Aguilar, Sabal wrote, “This is to inform you that for very personal family reasons that need my full attention, I will no longer be involved in the recall election against the Mayor that I initiated in your office. Because of my personal situation, I have for some time been unable to be actively involved in this process and feel it unfair to all those interested parties, supporters and helper s to continue without my full and active attention.

“It is imperative to note that my departure from the process does not negate the fact that there was an enormous amount of interest in changing the leadership in the Mayor’s office. The citizenry is extremely concerned about the cronyism, nepotism and favoritism blatantly seen coming out of his office along with the lack of leadership in very important city matters and projects.

“It is also interesting and important to note that there were many citizens that would not sign the public petition for fear of intimidation or retaliation.

“I would like to thank the many people that did sign and were willing to let their feelings of dissatisfaction be known regardless of the fear factor as well as the many others that informed me that they would vote for me had there been an election with a private ballot.”

The recall group has 120 days, until December 1, to collect 424 valid signatures  (25 percent of the total number of votes cast in the last mayoral election) to force a recall.

" I agree with Sara's statement regarding Fernandez' rude tactics. The bottom line is that not everyone will be happy with any council, with any Mayor. Cronyism, neptotism, and favoritism? Where do you get this stuff? "

I wrote a comment back to "Keep the discussion moving forward" last week. Would you please allow it to be published or are you continuing with your own personal adgenda?? "

" I am from Douglas!! You are right, we should look up to our elders and listen to what they are saying.

But, there are some elders that do not stop talking and at times we need to just walk away... OR rather let them walk away. Thank you Mr. Sabal for walking away! "

" Thanks to Natalio for stepping up to the plate. I am offended by "Interesting"'s ageist slur. In our society we look to our elders with respect and for wisdom--I don't know where "interesting" is from, but he's not from around here. "

" Douglas School Board Stonewalling Day 72

After 72 days of silence, the two board members who want to fire Douglas Schools Superintendent Earl Pettit still aren't saying why they want him gone. But Nine On Your Side has obtained new documents that shed more light on what's going on. The documents show that Stevenson Elementary volunteer and PTSO President Alvina Hoyack teamed up with her husband, school board president Chuck Hoyack, more than one year ago in a campaign to get rid of Pettit. Alvina Hoyack sent a total a total of at least five single-spaced pages filled with anti-Pettit invective to the school board. In the first, dated November 21, 2008, she wrote that Pettit "has neither couth nor morals" and asked the board to fire him. A few days later her husband tried to do that, scheduling a special board meeting for December 15th with just one issue on the agenda: Pettit's termination and interim replacement. The attempt to fire Pettit derailed when only one other board member, Patricia Lopez, showed up for the meeting.

Most of the finger-pointing was about the troubled English Language Learner program at Stevenson elementary, and a proposal from superintendent Pettit to reorganize the school. Nine on Your Side is working on a full report now. Watch for the latest tonight (Tuesday, November 24th) on KGUN9 News at 10. "

" Mr. Sabal's effort to bring the public's attention of how necessary it is for our community to listen and understand the importance of better leadership in our town is vital. I am sorry to hear Mr. Sabal is unable to continue his aspiration of being Mayor. Our community has suffered enough embarrasments with the new elected mayor. The council doesn't have the courage to do the right thing. They all have "vacant minds". We need leadership that cares for the city employees, the youth and the elderly. We also need to boost our economy in Douglas. Why would I want commerce or new businesses to start in Agua Prieta? The mayor and council are afraid of Fernandez because he is loud, nasty, brutal, and inhuman. I have heard him disparage them all and he has even laughed with me about the mayor's communication blunders. How can anyone believe in this vociferous ugly person? Like I said before "vacant minds"! "
