Tree stop draws huge crowds

Hundreds turned out on Saturday afternoon as a National Christmas Tree made a stop in Douglas for the first time. The tree, is enroute to Washington, D.C.


Mayor Dr. Michael Gomez and city staff have been working for months to get the tree to make a stop in Douglas.

The 85-foot Blue Spruce, which was cut down in Alpine, Arizona, was visible in a 4 foot by  4 foot opening in the semi-truck carrying it. People were also able to bring decorations for the tree and sign banners surrounding the truck the truck.

The trip to Washington D.C. began Saturday when “the people’s Christmas tree” was cut down from its eastern Arizona home about 5 miles west of Alpine, in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Over the next week and a half, the specimen blue spruce will tour the state on a 105-foot flatbed truck before beginning its cross-country trip to the Capitol in time for a lighting ceremony in early December. At that time, U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will flip the switch to illuminate the tree’s 10,000 decorative lights, culminating a tree-selection process that began more than two years ago.
