Mexico Consulates in state launch health campaign for winter season

To avoid fatalities, the consulates of Mexico in Arizona released  the Preventive Protection Campaign for the winter 2009-2010.


With the slogan “Don´t risk yourself. Don´t risk your family”,  the network of consulates warns about the increased vulnerability of children, pregnant women and elderly to the freezing temperatures of winter desert.

In this regard, the Head Consul of Mexico in Douglas, Oscar  Antonio de la Torre Amezcua, stressed the importance of calling to the attention of his compatriots who, in their pursuit of the American dream, risk their lives and sometimes their family´s life too.

The Mexican diplomat reported that during 2009, in his constituency  have occured more than two dozen deaths of Mexicans who attempted to reach the United States. Most of them from exposure to the environment, whether severe dehydration on summer or hypothermia as a result of  the freezing winter temperatures.

Consul de la Torre lamented the seriousness of such situations,  while stressing the importance of preventive actions to avoid fatal outcome. “Our mission is to serve the needs of our compatriots, especially those most vulnerable. Our concept of protection includes not only dealing with particular cases, but informing and preventing. That’s why we also offer our countrymen two phone lines so they can call when they need it.
