Two men from Chihuahua, Mexico are in custody in New Mexico following the armed robbery of a Portal man and his wife.

According to Carol Capas of the Cochise County Sheriffs Dept., on Wednesday, January 20 at approximately 6:18 pm, the CCSO was advised of an armed robbery that just occurred in the Portal area near the Cochise County / New Mexico State line.

The caller advised that two Hispanic male subjects had just forced their way into the residence, subdued the homeowners and stolen their truck.

Capas said upon arrival at the residence deputies conducted an interview with the 75-year old male victim and his 74-year old wife.

“Both stated that they had been at home cooking dinner when two Hispanic male subjects came into the fenced yard, approached the house and knocked on the door,” Capas said.  “When the couple went to the door the two subjects forced their way inside armed with a machete.”

Capas said the suspects demanded money and the keys for the vehicle before restraining the victims to chairs with duct tape. The suspects then proceed to rummage through the home leaving after approximately 15 minutes.

“The female victim was secured loosely enough for her to get out of the tape restraints and free her husband before calling 9-1-1,” Capas said. “The victims advised that they were not injured only bruised during the time they were restrained.”

The vehicle information was entered into the National Crime Information System and attempts to locate were issued for all surrounding agencies to include New Mexico.

A short time later the New Mexico Department of Public Safety advised that they had located the vehicle travelling at mile post 22 on Interstate 10 Eastbound and after a short pursuit they apprehended two Hispanic male subjects and recovered the vehicle.

Both subjects, identified as Eriberto Marquez, 21, and Martin Uriel Chavira-Morquecho, 19, were transported to the Hidalgo County Jail where they are being held on local charges.

Sheriff’s Detectives responded to New Mexico and interviewed the suspects who admitted that they had forced their way into the residence and taken the vehicle.

Capas said the suspects advised that they had been walking for approximately one week and they were tired and hungry.

The two men advised that when the residents refused to give them a ride, they took the vehicle and some food from the home.

Capas said Marquez and Chavira-Morquecho will be held in the Hidalgo County Jail pending adjudication of local charges and then be turned over to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office for prosecution in this case.

The vehicle was returned to the owners and the investigation is being continued by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
