The Douglas Unified School District Governing Board moved forward with its search for a new superintendent during a special meeting on Tuesday, January 19.

During the meeting, the board agreed to begin conducting a search for an eventual replacement for Earl Pettit, who was placed on paid administrative leave until his contract runs out on June 30. Business Manager Denise Evans and OSI Director  Leann Bowley are working to gather information to begin the process.

During the meeting, the board also named Bowley as the interim administrator, while they conduct a search for someone to complete the remainder of the year in the position.

The board also refused to release the transcripts relating to the Pettit investigation until they had been properly redacted to protect those that spoke to the investigator.

In other action, the board:

Approved correspondence to Earl Pettit concerning his administrative reassignment.

√ Approved compensation of $25 daily for tutoring for Monica Lumiere and Judy Herbert.

√ Approved extra compensation in the amount of one-sixth of base salary for Emilio Gonzalez for an additional concert band class taught at zero hour.

√ Approve out-of-state travel for Bonnie Lopez, DHS Principal, to present at College Board Western Regional Forum in San Diego next month.

" Watch out what you ask for you just might get it. The last thing this district needs are people running for the school board for the sole purpose of changing the majority. If you are not in the field of education you really have no clue what it's all about. That is a fact! The school board needs retired educators with no agendas and a realistic view of education. The rest of you need to take care of your children and raise them right so educators can concentrate on educating. "

" This board has more than proved they are vindictive and mean. I am sure you don't have a kid in school. Wait till you get on wrong side then wish you didn't have the headache. Come election time or hopefully sooner if AG gets involved we will see that many more people will get involved. Yes I do have every right to criticize this board. I hope they are punished for their disrespect of voters and the law. I think they are an embarrassment. "

" THANK YOU! You hit the nail on the head. Everyone can complain and say very nasty things about the board, but where were all these people when it was election time? Everyone wants to ***** about the decisions that have been made and put comments about the morals of the board members. Many people say they are concerned and have issues with things that are going on, how many of you attend the monthly meetings? I know most of the people making these comments are not there! These people are okay complaining by writing a comment that takes them a big 3 minutes, but when it comes to taking the time to attend the meetings they either don’t want to go or have a lame excuse as to why they can’t. So unless you are going to put your name and attend the meetings then don’t make comments. "

" It is true it is easier to be an armchair quarterback but whenever you take a job as a public official you also take the responsibilities that come with it. Like it or not. The school board members are elected officials and there is absolutely no excuse for not commenting publicly about things this important. None! Especially when they seem to have the time to e-mail each other but not inform us why they are going to cost us so much money. It is inexcusable!
Even if they comment now it will be well rehearsed and trying to rewrite history to make themselves look good. "

" It is very easy to sit in the bleachers and pass judgement on how the team should run. It is a lot tougher when you are on the field of play. What has transpired in the Douglas Unified School District did not occur overnight. The last 3 board members were appointed, they were not elected. Where are all the people who are willing to make the changes? Until you get out of the bleachers and get on the field quit complaining. "

    " Missing info:
A couple of years ago before Zamar they hired a new female superintendent and did the same thing to her. She was run out of town before she even got a chance to buy a house. She hired an attorney, Steve Weiss, and settled behind the scenes with a non disclosure agreement. Steve Weiss is a very good attorney. He wouldn't have settled for peanuts to keep quiet. We, the taxpayers, never knew how much it cost us. I forget her name but I believe she had some connection to Nogales. "

" Why would anyone in their right mind be willing to accept the position of Superintendent of our school district? Look at just how many Superintendents our community has run out of town or ruined!!! I think that before we can go looking for a new administrator in charge-we need to do some SERIOUS house cleaning and remove the toxic board members and personnel in the Main Office.

Let's bring the DUSD into a new era by starting with a clean slate. "
