For the fifth straight year the Douglas Lady Bulldogs are headed back to the state playoffs.

The Douglas Lady Bulldogs soccer team honored their five seniors last week. Those honored were Victoria Sanchez, manager David Figueroa, Giovanni Posada, Lina Campbell, Elizabeth Clark and Elise Urquijo. The Lady Bulldogs are in Phoenix today taking on Paradise Valley in the first round of the 4A DII state playoffs.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association released the playoff brackets Sunday and the 12th seeded Lady Bulldogs, 12-7 overall, 6-1 in league play, will head to Phoenix Wednesday to take on five seed Paradise Valley. Game time will be 6:30 p.m.

Three teams from the Gila Region made it into the top 16. Despite being the 20th seed Cholla grabbed the final spot in the 16 team tournament and has the difficult task of playing No. 1 Mingus in the first round. Region champion Palo Verde the No. 8 seed will host No. 9 Scottsdale Notre Dame. Both of those games will take place on Wednesday.

Douglas heads to state on a three-game winning streak. All three wins came this past week.

On Jan. 26 the Lady Bulldogs beat Rio Rico 4-0 as Lina Campbell scored two goals and Martha Lamadrid and Elise Urquijo each had one.

Douglas out shot Rio Rico 21-0.

Last Thursday the Lady Bulldogs edged Sahuarita 2-1 as Campbell again had both goals.

Campbell’s goal in the 16th minute gave the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the half.

Sahuarita tied the match in the second half. Campbell would later score off a Urquijo assist giving Douglas a 2-1 lead.

Sahuarita out shot Douglas 12-11. Lady Bulldog goalie Liz Clark had just two saves.

On Friday the Lady Bulldogs beat Catalina 3-0. Campbell scored two goals both off Urquijo assists and Victoria Mariscal had a second half goal off a direct kick giving Douglas its 3-0 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs out shot Catalina 15-1. Clark had just one save at goalie.

Douglas’ Coach Angelica Chavez said her team is playing well right now and looking forward to the state tournament.

The coach said in looking at Paradise Valley’s schedule she feels her team matches up well with them.

“I like our chances,” she said.

The coach said this Douglas team has shown some tremendous growth since the start of the season and now they are looking forward to pursuing their goal of winning a state championship. Should Douglas get past the first round the Lady Bulldogs will play the winner of the Coconino vs. Greenway game Friday at 6 p.m. in Mesa.

Junior varsity

The Douglas Lady Bulldogs JV team ended its season last week with three straight wins to finish the year 9-2.

On Friday the Douglas JV’s beat Catalina 7-1 to end the season.

Stats from the game were not available.

On Thursday the Lady Bulldogs JV’s beat Sahuarita’s JV’s 1-0.

Midway through the first half Soheila Cuevas found the back of the net to put the Lady Bulldogs on the board.

“We pretty much controlled the game,” Coach Mario Romero said. “Both teams came out a bit sluggish the first half. We had our opportunities to score we just couldn't find the back of the net.”

Looking back on the season Coach Romero said he was very proud of the girls.

“We had to make some changes on the field throughout the year, and the girls responded,” he said.

The Lady Bulldogs JV’s outscored their opponents 36-11 in the nine games.
