DOUGLAS — Former Buena High standout Derek Lane came off the bench in the second half to hit two critical 3-pointers as part of a torrid second-half comeback by Cochise College in an 89-72 win over visiting South Mountain Community College on Saturday.

Cochise trailed 48-38 at halftime, but stormed back to take a 64-62 lead by the 10-minute mark.

“We started guarding better,” Cochise head coach Jerry Carrillo said. “Our field goal percentage defense was really bad in the first half. But in the second half our guys contested shots and got stops which made us able to score in transition.”

Xavier Blount led Cochise with 25 points followed by Marcus Williams with 16. Ray Marshall and Brandon MacLellan had 10 points apiece. Lane finished with eight.

The Apaches (18-4, 13-2) stay tied atop the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference standings, along with Arizona Western and Mesa.

Cochise has the tiebreaker edge over those teams because of head-to-head victories over both.

Cochise travels to Chandler-Gilbert on Wednesday before returning home to host Eastern Arizona on Saturday.
