Fred Telles

Fred Telles, a lifelong Arizona Rancher died at his home on the Bayo Ranch near Willcox on February 2, 2010 at the age of 87. He was born in Benson on April 7, 1922 to Juan and Juanita Hughes Telles. Fred began his career at the family homestead in Elgin, AZ. He continued his life as a cattleman at the Stearns Family Rose Tree Ranch. Fred then worked at the Bar C L ranch in the Courtland/Pearce area.

Manuel “Barbitas” Calvario Acuna

Mr. Manuel “Barbitas” Calvario Acuña passed away January 31, 2010 at the Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.   Manuel was born in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico on February 22, 1914 to Concepcion and Isabel Calvario Acuna.   Manuel had a long career playing baseball in Mexico.  On November 20, 1981 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a pitcher.   He is survived by his sister, Aurelia Rivas from Phoenix, Arizona and brother, Beto Acuña from Douglas, Arizona.   We give thanks to all who assisted us in all of the funeral services.

Roma Freedman

Roma Freedman died in Tucson on January 25, 2010 at the age of 102.  She was born in Altamont, Kansas on December 15, 1907.  She moved to Tucson in 1927 to teach music for two years in the Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind.  She then married the late Walter Freedman and moved to Douglas.  She lived in Douglas until she was 100 years old.  While a resident of Douglas she raised five children, taught piano, wrote many magazine articles, and traveled extensively.  She is survived by a daughter, Florence Brown of New Orleans, LA; a son, Joseph Freedman of Los Osos, California; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

Evangelina Montelongo Cantu

Evangelina Montelongo Cantu entered her final resting place on February 17, 2010.  She was born September 15, 1923 in Douglas, Arizona.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Jimmie Cantu.   She graduated from Douglas High in 1941.   Received her R.N. from Good Samaritan Nursing School in 1944.   She entered the Army  Nurse Corps in 1945, was commissioned as a  Second Lieutenant and received the  World War II Victory Medal, and the American Theatre Medal .  She worked as a nurse for Phelps Dodge Corporation for 30 years.  After retiring she volunteered at the Food Bank and was President of the Senior Citizens.   Eva was an example of caring, courage, compassion.  She had  a delightful sense of humor.  She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her son Luis Montelargo, grandson Michael Vasquez, her sisters: Elizabeth Lopez and Amelia Varela and numerous close relatives, and friends. \
