Lady Bulldog netters win two, lose one

The Douglas Lady Bulldog tennis team played three matches in three days last week and took two of three beating Amphi and Cholla while losing to Catalina.


Bruce Whetten/Douglas Dispatch Kristi Cormier, went 3-0 last week in her No. 1 singles spot last week as the Lady Bulldogs knocked off Amphi and Cholla but fell to Catalina.

The Lady Bulldogs began the week beating Amphi 7-2, then lost to Catalina 5-4 only to rebound with a 6-3 win over Cholla.

Kristi Cormier, playing No. 1 singles for Douglas, was 3-0 on the week beating Amphi 7-6 (11-9 tiebreaker) and 6-0; downing Catalina 6-3, 7-5 before knocking off Cholla 6-4, 6-3.

Her sister Kim Cormier, playing in the No. 2 spot, was 2-1 on the week beating Amphi 0-6, 6-0, 10-4; losing to Catalina 2-6, 3-6 before beating Cholla 6-1, 6-0.

Tanya Nunez, playing No. 3 singles for the Lady Bulldogs, lost to Amphi 5-7, 2-6; beat Catalina 6-4, 6-0 and downed Cholla 6-1, 6-2.

Argentina Morales, in the No. 4 spot, beat Amphi 7-5, 6-0; lost to Catalina 6-4, 57, 8-10 and fell to Cholla 1-6, 4-6.

Valeria Cordova beat Amphi 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 and Catalina 6-4, 6-1 but did not play against Cholla. Her replacement Kassandra Valencia fell to Cholla 0-6, 0-6.

Danielle Miller was 1-2 on the week losing to Amphi 0-6, 4-6 and Catalina 2-6, 2-6 before beating Cholla 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play the Cormier sisters beat Amphi 6-5 in a match that was stopped due to the lack of lighting.

Nunez and Miller were 9-7 winners and Cordova and Galindo 8-5 winners.

Against Catalina the Cormier pair fell 5-8; Nunez and Miller lost 5-8 and Morales and Cordova were 8-5 winners.

Against Cholla, Kim Cormier and Nunez posted an 8-1 win; Kristi Cormier and Morales were 8-3 winners and Miller and Valencia fell 3-8.

In junior varsity play Carolina Ortiz and Gabriela Ramirez fell 2-8, 0-8 to Amphi while Shaiya McNabb and Alexia Melgoza lost 0-8, 1-8.

Against Catalina, Marissa Aguirre was a 6-4, 6-0 winner in singles while Melgoza fell 1-6, 2-6, 4-6 and 3-6; McNabb lost 0-6, 0-6, 0-6.

In doubles, Aguirre and McNabb lost 5-7.

No JV matches were played against Cholla.

Looking back on the week Douglas’ first year coach Camilla Altree said her team played well for the most part and Catalina was great competition.

 “I’m proud of their improvement and their ability to adapt to changes,” she said. “There were many excellent rallies and points played on both sides. We will work hard during spring break to improve our weaknesses and sharpen our strengths with the help of Coach Ken Cormier.”

The Lady Bulldogs, 4-1, are currently ranked sixth in the power rankings along with Sahuarita who Douglas will host when it returns to league play March 23.
