Principals placed on leave after mishandling drugs discovery

Two Huber administrators were given one day of administrative leave without pay after failing to follow district policy in the handling of  a foreign substance, that later was discovered to be cocaine.

Huber principal  Martin Muecke and Assistant Principal Cliff Dunlap were placed on leave after a substance Dunlap mistook for sugar stayed in his desk for more than a week instead of calling police.

Muecke was later transferred to Clawson School as a Administrative Assistant and Clawson Principal Andrea Overman is now serving as principal of both schools.

Chief Executive officer for the District Ray Borane said the reassignment had nothing to do with cocaine incident and was simply a personnel move.

According to Douglas Police, on February 18, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Paul Huber Middle School security officers took a clear plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance to the Douglas Police Department for drug testing.

PHMS security officers advised police that the baggie was found on Friday, February 12 by Dunlap.

Douglas Police tested the substance and it tested positive for cocaine.

Douglas Police seized the cocaine, which weighed a total of 1 gram.  The cocaine was placed into evidence at Douglas PD for found narcotics.

" yeah i know Mueke was sorta involved and also Mr.Dunlap but give em a break! me speaking as a student from them i swear its those kids in the school thinking they can have control over the main office and everyone in the school my old principle and vice principle shouldn't be blamed for a stupid little mistake that happened blame the idiot kids who brought the "sugar" so what if Mr.Dunlap didn't know it was cocaine. it really isn't their fault. yes i know you adults think your better than us little kids but realize this I'm speaking to adults now and i have my opinions as much as the next guy. but really don't fire anyone!! my friends and myself have been talking about this and our conclusion was the kids Dunlap confiscated the cocaine was a set up so they could get 'em in trouble. from my three years being in Paul Huber middle school i swear on my own grave that the staff was wonderful. kids these days just have to know when to grow up. and now that i have moved away you look back upon yourself and get the guilty feeling you did things so horrible in your years and yes i admit that somethings i do regret doing. but please citizens of Douglas, hear my plea, don't be mad at the principle and vice principle. yea i know they should have reported it but they didn't know what it was and please(: i beg no name calling be adults for once..sheesh(: "

" perhaps the principal was exercising the mexican "legal personal possession right" where so long as it is a personal amount, than its ok in Mexico.

Anyways, this is sad. just continues to give Douglas a bad rap.

How will these teachers ever work again? what are they supposed to say if they look for another job when they have to disclose this situation.

BTW, don't people usually get arrested for possession of illegal drugs? "

" What if it belonged to the Asst. Principal??? This school needs to evaluate what kind of teachers they have teaching our kids. Enough of what they do on their own time is their business. Teachers should set a good example for our kids, not ruin them. My son has always had good grades until he went into a certain teachers class this year. She would rather text and talk on the phone then earn her paycheck. Go figure. We need qualified teachers!!! "

" Did anyone drug test that assistant who "found" that bag. How funny it took so long for him to report it. How do we know he didn't dip into it. He got what he deserved, but he should have also been drug tested. You can't trust anyone anymore, just remember Mr. Watkins and the disappearing money. Now we all know what he was doing with that! "

" As an officer I know we are supposed to get called as soon as any substance that is questionable is found or confiscated. This was a complete mishandling of the situation that could have resulted with tragic consequences. Then again with all the turmoil these principals have had it is not a surprise that miscommunication was a huge factor. It seems that other principals know the protocol why didn't these two? "

" Ok, sorry to burst your bubble but Muecke was hired prior to Pettit, so try to find another excuse. He is responsible and does a poor job at managing his staff. The same can be said about Dunlap. Both undermine each other and both should be non-renewed. "

" there are so many things going on right now...the point is there have been so many complaint on teachers from students and a particular person who has claims against a teacher so that was one of the reasons why Mr. Meueck got reassigned 2nd the vice principal Mr.Dunlap should have been reassigned to secretary he may do a better job. I still can't get over the whole " SUGAR" thing. Mr. Dunlap should get whats coming to him and rumors are he wants to be principal next year can you imagine he held drugs in his desk one week before they decided to look into it what else has he kept in his desk? humm scary..I will fight and get my point across to prevent him from getting a administrative position. He thinks he got away from everything but NOPE he hasn't KARMA....As for Mr. Meueck he deserves to be placed back in Huber and continue his GREAT job he's doing..FIRE DUNLAP....FIRE DUNLAP "

" Hey "Wayne", how do you know that cocaine came from a drug trafficer in Mexico. It was found on school grounds! Also, these people mishandled the whole situation. They deserved what they got. They should have turned that bag as soon as they got it. Whether it was "sugar" or cocaine, it was supposed to be reported immediately. What if some kids took it from that desk and decided to test it out himself? Then what? He should have reported it ASAP. Have some common sense PLEASE!!!!! "

" Hey Wayne, Don't you think that the Administrators should be held to a higher standard? Maybe they should have called the police right away and got it taken care of within a few minutes. Maybe there was more and only on package was turned in... Maybe Maybe Maybe... They should have been arrested for Possession of the Cocaine, being that they were just holding it... Imagine a drug dealers who says the same, "Honestly Officers, I was going to turn it in..." "

" A personnel move from Principal to adminstrative assistant? Was Mr. Mueke one of the people Mr. Petit hired? Are "we" on a vendata? Let's see, under Mr. Mueke the attendance was up, he has firm drug and "weapon" policy and he is punished for an assistant principal who had something in his desk? Okay, Mr. Borane, and all of the other admin's lets do a once a week check on every desk in the school district. Perhaps we should do this with the police on board as well. My boss can go through my desk at any time and my boss would probably be looking for unfinished work because my boss does not trust me, however, who in their right mind would expect an assistant to mistake sugar for cocaine? I am so angry at the reassignment of Mr. Mueke that I cannot even put into words the feeling of hopelessness, despair and rage I feel for the governing body of this school district.

Mr. Mueke, you got the raw end of the deal on the heels of a community that dislikes any newcomer. Take it with a grain of salt and the best of luck to you in your next position. "

" That was a harsh punishment for an innocent mistake. Even the drug addicts and traffickers get away without any punishment for such a small amount. This is another example of misplaced priorities. The student who had the drugs should be expelled. The drug trafficker who brought it in from Mexico should be tracked down and jailed. "
