The Douglas Unified School District Governing Board moved forward with projects approved as part of the November Bond Election during its March 2 meeting.

The board approved the lease agreement with the City of Douglas for Causey Park, which includes Copper King Baseball Stadium and Armando de Lucas football field.

The lease requires the school district to notify the city 90 days before beginning discussion on any changes, upgrading the liability insurance as well as updating the facilities information.

During the meeting, the board also reviewed the Bond schedule.

The $7.4 million bond issue calls for the startup of some of the construction as early as May.

The projects approved and projected costs include:

√ Clawson Elementary School Multi-Purpose Room, $1.365 million.

√ Stadium Athletic Field artificial turf, $800,000

√ Stadium Fieldhouse, $788,259.

√ Stevenson Elementary School renovations, $374,174.

√ Paul Huber Middle School door replacement, $124,430

√ Douglas High School Americans with Disabilities Act renovations, $776,241.

√ District-wide roofing renovations, $3,214,073.

Site visits to the football field has already been completed. Proposals from interested bidders are and presentations were concluded in February.

The selection of the contractor will take place in March and the district will issue the purchase order to begin the work in April.

Most of the work is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of August, including the artificial turf, district-wide roofing and renovations and the DHS ADA improvements. The athletic fieldhouse will not be completed until October 29, and the Clawson Multi-Purpose Room will be finished in December.

" Someone has to have the responsibility to feed the children, provide them with health care, and school materials. Perhaps you haven't noticed, but the parents are not doing it. Do I think that it is the government's responsibility? No, but if the parents don't do it, then someone needs to. If the kids come to school hungry, not feeling well, and don't have supplies then someone has to take care of that. If you want the kids to learn their basic needs must be taken care of first. "

" first $30,000+ for the electronic sign in front of DHS, now $800,000 for turf? all the schools to include DHS need to pay teachers we need to keep classes with fewer students, new desks, new computers, enough books. Let's spend the money EDUCATING!!!!!! We all need to pay attention and attend these board meetings to prevent the waste, not just complain! "

" Ok RBMS parent. Obviously you have spent no time at Stevenson or with any of the individuals who make up that school to lump them in there with the power ranking accusations. It is EXHAUSTING to continually hear the bickering and finger pointing! People blammed Petitt and cried till he was out, and people are still whinning and crying now that he is gone! My Goodness! When will it end? Why has the focus of education shifted away from the students! The inter-district fighting is not good for anyone. These are hard time for everyone, so why don't we worry about what we can control and take care of business to the best of our abilities, which includes solving problems the best way possible...together! " You said, "With the great amount of cuts, we will have to be providing kids with take home food for the weekend. We may have to provide more health care assistance at school now that the Kids Care is cut."

Since when is it the school's responsibility to feed children and provide their health care? If you cannot support a child, DO NOT HAVE ONE!!!!

Governement is not the answer to your problems.

Does self responsibilty mean anything anymore??? "

" Are you serious? Complaining of no paper or pencils? Isn't that the parents responsibility?! Parents can also volunteer at the schools. Help paint the walls or clean the playground. Take pride in your own schools and help them to help your children. Parents need to be proactive in their childrens education. Don't expect the schools to do it alone. "

" Anyone know the status with the Pettit situation? Status of lawsuit and claim. Status of Attorney General investigation? Our paper covers nothing and our elected politicians refuse to comment. They are now hiding behind Borane hoping it will all go away. I don't know how they think anyone will trust them with our money again. I want to know if any district money is being spent on this scandal as well as what projects are undertaken. "

" For you Pettit's supporters, this was his idea. These were the kind of decisions he was making without discussing with other administrators or members of the community. Thank him for the increase on your tax bill that won't solve our financial difficulties. By the way, where is our watchdog Nava when we need him. "

" Why isn't the money covering more important things like making RAY BORANE more HANDICAP friendly? Do you know that this school has no ramps to reach the 2nd or 3rd floors? Buildings have roof leaks, no adequate heating, OUR CHILDREN have no BASIC school supplies like paper, pencils, books, etc... but yet the the football field is getting renovations? Don't the BOARD MEMBERS see any problems here? Why don't they stop sending all these DUSD employees to conventions or meeting and put the money back into the school district? Here they are paying for reading, math and induction coaches who don't do a darn thing, put there butts back into the the classroom and pay them as regular teachers. As well as parent liasons who are really secretaries that have been given a "TITLE" and more money! ELC is also closing due to no money? It is simple people, quit sending people out of town on conferences, get rid of these new induction "COACHES"(who r paid how many thousands) for doing nothing, quit wasting money on nonsense things and let get this district back on track! "

" I personally don't think that the district should go ahead with any projects at this time that the state has these huge budget cuts. I realize the voters passed this back in November, but that was before the community was aware of the impending budget cuts. Maintenance and operations of the athletic fields can wait. Sports should not be a priority at this time. People's jobs and their lives should be. With the great amount of cuts, we will have to be providing kids with take home food for the weekend. We may have to provide more health care assistance at school now that the Kids Care is cut. Is this really the time for such outrageous spending for atheletics? Let's get our priorities straight. "

" All this spending, spending, spending and they are going to lay-off school staff. But of course, the board will probably have a lame excuse and say the money being used is from "somewhere else" not from the district. What about the fancy marque the high school bought, what for??? I see it as wasteful spending and a higher electic bill. "

RBMS PARENT wrote on Mar 10, 2010 7:48 PM:

" RBMS is 100 years old this year and is the oldest building in the District! Clawson's multi purpose room is legit but how can 800,000 in field turf and 788,000 in the field house, both at the high school, and Huber doors and who knows what at Stevenson be more important than mold on the walls at RBMS, water leaks in the ceiling, paint peeling on the walls, etc.... Though the current administration has done an admirable job raising money and having work crews fix that place up, it's no where near the work that is needed. Some things NEVER CHANGE as it's obvious where the power lies......DHS, HUBER, and STEVENSON!!!!!!!! "
