Douglas had been selected as the host city for the 2010 Arizona State Little League 9-10 year old tournament this coming July

The announcement was made last week at the District 8 meeting in Sierra Vista. Douglas beat out Nogales who was also in contention to host the state event.

In previous years the state tournament would take place in mid July and feature 14 teams from all over the state converging on a city for two weeks playing pool play games for 10 days before taking the top two to three teams in each pool and having them play a single elimination tournament that would determine a state champion.

That will change this year.

Brooks Bishop, the assistant District 8 Administrator, said most of the tournaments, depending on how many teams they have competing, will be split up into a north and south sectional.

Those tournaments would play either a pool play or double elimination format, depending on what state officials decide, and from there the top two teams from each tournament will meet to decide the state champion.

Bishop said the state 9-10 champion will be crowned in Douglas this year.

This will be the first time Douglas has hosted a state Little League event.

In previous years there have been numerous district Little League tournaments, state softball tournaments and when Babe Ruth was active in Douglas there was numerous state tournaments highlighted by the 1966 Babe Ruth World Series which was held at Copper King Stadium.

Local Little League officials say this tournament will greatly benefit the city and they are looking for volunteers to assist with the event.

Rio Rico, which is from District 8, won the 9-10 state championship last year in Mesa

" This is so exciting. I can hardly wait for all this to happen. Douglas so deserves this honor. Our city has been about baseball for as long as I can remember. Not sure how this happened but my hat is off to whomever made this happen. We should be proud to have excellent team members who work hard for our kids. I live out of town and you can be sure that I will take time off to volunteer my time. Way to go! With all the bad news Douglas has had it sure feels good to see some good. Let's just make sure that none of them DUSD board members be a part of this. Now that would be a scary experience.. "
