Several shots traveled through Krentz’s body, indicating the shooter was in close proximity. Only one bullet was recovered from Krentz’s body, according to the report.
The rancher was not shot from behind but was believed to be shot while riding his ATV, stated Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever.
According to the report, Krentz sustained traumatic injury to his head, chest, abdomen, extremities, back and buttocks. The back of his right hand had scraps and abrasions believed to be caused by falling to the ground from his Polaris after being shot, Dever said.
Krentz was murdered on his family’s 35,000-acre ranch March 27. He had radioed to his family around 10:30 saying he had encountered a southbound illegal immigrant and had called Border Patrol. He was to meet his brother at 12:30 but never showed up.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter later found his body; he was dead at the scene. Krentz’s death has been at the center of the immigration debate in Arizona and has been felt all over the country.
