It's "Tea" time in Douglas as the city prepares for its first Tea Party meeting .

This first meeting will be held on Saturday, July 17, at the Gadsden Hotel. It will be held from noon to 3 p.m. and the public is invited.

Local Tea Party organizer Dorothea Packard-Watkins said, “I wanted to start a Tea Party in Douglas because this is where the horror is happening with the border and it is time for change.

“The Tea Party is a spontaneous gathering of local people who want to see a change.”

Jesse Kelly, a candidate for U.S. Congress will be one of the main speakers. Also, at the local event will be Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet, Founder and Medical Director of Her Place: Health Enhancment and Renewal for Women and Gabby Mercer, Smart Girl Politics.

Kelly is a former United States marine who moved to Tucson in 2004. His primary policy is to finish the double layer border fence. He has been to Douglas many times and has also toured the border.

Kelly wants to secure the border first and stop the influx of illegal immigration, then work towards building up legal immigration policies and funding, Director of Communications, John Ellinwood, said.

He became involved with the Tea Party in 2009 in Tucson and has been involved in Benson, Wilcox, Bisbee, Green Valley, Sonoita and more. The Tea Party will be hosting an event July 17 at the Gadsden Hotel from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. the public is invited.

What is the Tea Party?

The reason for the Tea Party movement is to stop excessive government spending and taxation, the Tea Party Patriots Web site said. Their mission is to attract, educate, organize, and mobilize fellow citizens to secure public policy consistent with their three core values of Fiscal Responsibility, Constitutionally Limited Government and Free Markets.

The Tea Party movement started in 2009 as a reaction in large part to the Obama administrations health care reform, the Website said.

" It must feel great to pound your chest and brag that you are an hispanic U.S. citizen and you are against the migrants. Just make sure you carry your birth certificate, social security card and driver's license with you at all times. Otherwise you might be on the next bus to Hermosillo. Maybe the tea party can get you a ticket home. "

" I don't think people are pro illegal immigration, but I do believe they are the easy scape goat. The problem is the economy is horrible right now and thus it is easy to blame people who will do jobs most Americans do not want. Supply and demand, simple as that. If there were no jobs they would not be here. As for the Tea Party the misguided anger should have been shown when the Patriot Act went into effect but it was not. They should be anti 1070 as it gives the govt more power but they are not. It seems to me they come off as hyporcrites and the same anger which fuels them will eventually consume them, read Animal Farm simply put EVERY ANIMAL IS EQUAL SOME ARE JUST MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS and the animals we put in office are all the same its human nature Republican, Democrat, Tea Party are all puppets so lay back and enjoy America for being great and don't take America only when it suits your views of what it never was. " I'm hispanic and I believe in border security and illegal immigrant apprehension ... does that make me "anti-mexican" ??? Humor me ... Just because I don't pander to people who do the wrong thing and live according to their hypocrisy(regardless where they came from) on top of the drug overlords that strangle our own lifesake. Now if you have a personal vendetta against someone that is your own deal but spewing irreverent rhetoric to slander somebodies name is downright low and pathetic. Whatever the case is let the real victims fight for what is right. "

    " @ WhatAJoke:

I wouldn't know much about our ever so corrupt communal politics but I refuse to condone superficial and un-founded remarks. Now I happen to know who Ms. Novoa-Benson is. I met her a couple of times and seemed to be a nice and informed individual. Our problems with our border are apalling and out of control. I was born in Douglas, raised in Mexico for half of my childhood and came back home. Le agradesco por categorizarme como racista ya que defiendo nuestras leyes migratorias (con todo mi sarcasmo le reprocho). I choose to set my foot down and fight for what is right and decide not to pander to the mafioso hierarchy that has decades of consumption to our already cancerous town (disgruntled much?). I propose anybody who "fights for ILLEGAL Immigrants interests" are racist themselves, yes that means you and your genocidal mindset. If you want to get your panties all bunched up for somebody you might have a bad blood with, more power to you, but let real people who care about their community (and country) do their job instead of slowing them down. Thank You. "

" The only reason the Tea Party exists is it appeals to people who hate minorities and using the KKK would be too obvious. Don't allow this movement in Douglas We have always lived in a dual cultural peacefully and now there's no doubt this group of fools is trying to bring turmoil to our town. It is not a worthwhile group just people who want to nurture hate and with the world the way it is they should be working toward productive solutions but it's far easier to spit out hateful rhetoric! "

" Let me guess.... Alice Novoa-Benson will show up (who is Hispanic) and shed her anti-mexican views???

No disrespect to this meeting at all, just another way for Mrs. Novoa-Benson to spread her negative views twords Hispanics (even though she will not admit to be one)!!! "
