Ralph Schneider of Phoenix is the new Douglas High School principal.

The decision was made last week during a meeting in which some position were shuffled within the district.

In addition to the hiring of Schneider, DHS Assistant Principal Daniel Bates was given athletic director responsibilities at a total salary of $67,000 annually.

The previous athletic director, Randy Walker, was moved to DHS Assistant Principal with a salary of $67,584.

Schneider, who’s salary is $78,750, was hired to replace Bonnie Lopez, who moved up to assistant superintendent for the district.

Most recently, Schneider has been the Educational Consultant/Marketing Director for Teen AA in Phoenix. The program was designed to assist students with addictive behaviors.

Prior to that position, he worked as the Orangedale Elementary/Junior High principal and Madison Meadows Middle School, both in Phoenix; and South Amherst Middle School in Ohio from 2001 to 2009. Among his accomplishments, he cites:

√ Successfully led three schools to performing/performing plus/excelling status.

√ Utilized building budget to save the district 20 percent of annual budgeted amount.

√Obtained grants and developed motivational strategies to inspire students and staff.

√ Educational leader for 55 certified and non-certified staff with 750 students.

He previously also served as assistant principal at a Ohio high school.

" I am a current student and my parents tried to go and see a math teacher no longer employed at DHS (I wonder why? yeah right, almost everyone failed her class) Mrs. Lopez would not allow for one of my parents to sit in the class to observe her teachings. It just was not allowed but it in the end there was so many complaints of that certain teacher by other parents that she is no longer there. Don't get me wrong, I do have school spirit. I am in the Star Fish club and I my parents support the school and me. It's just that there are evil lazy teachers that should be out. Maybe you are a relative to one and thought you should defend their honor. Who knows.. but I am happy with the new principal and Mr. Bates Rocks!! "

" It is very admirable to defend the administrators, but did you see the news that our district failed to acheive Adequate Yearly Progress (AYO)? We will be in a Local Education Agency Improvement Plan. District students failed to meet or beat Arizona School Proficiency rates at any grade level in reading and math. It is great to teach to the test but are our students really better at reading and math? "

" What hate exists among a few individuals. Surely the racist remarks, the bashing of the school, the lies about the previous administration, especially the "To Good Luck" on August 9th comment that couldn't make up their mind if they were a student or parent which goes to show you that whoever wrote this has no basis for such lies! Instead of trying to spread hate why don't you praise the great kids that are so involved in school making a difference, the teachers who DO teach overcrowded classes and still find time to build student spirit, The principals who work to maintain order, learning and operations of the building, the counselors who have huge student responsibility, the custodians who have to keep the campus clean when students just leave trash all over because they haven't been taught at home, the parents who DO work to promote things for students by raising money for student activities,oh yes hate is for those cowards who sit at a computer writing hateful things because it's easy to do. You are thank goodness in the minority! You are just taking up space, a true zero in society. Keep typing away because that's all you can do. Coward!!! "

" There are so many issues mentioned here that are so glaringly incorrect that I felt the need to speak up. First, students can eat in the cafeteria at lunch. They have teachers there supervising on a rotation, but many students prefer to sit outside the cafeteria in the patio dining or get their food from one of the lunch carts and sit at the picnic tables stationed in each wing.
Secondly, the "cracker" comment is pretty sad. Why make race such an issue? The new principal seems very nice and has good experience.
Finally, parents cannot just walk into classes not because the school is hiding something, but because there are insurance and federal policies that make it tough for a school to just freely allow visitors. Parents can come, but it must be cleared, etc. In fact, some teachers request for parents to watch if there have been behavior issues.
Support your local schools- they are doing their best with a shrinking budget. DHS has been Performing Plus for the past three years- not exactly a reflection of teachers not teaching. And- what would you like teachers to do while your students read silently- stare at them? It's generally 15 minutes and studies have shown that that time of SSR has greatly impacted reading scores- an area in which all students seem to need improvement. "

" as a resident of douglas, i find it appalling to read that students at the high school eat in the hallways. i took a trip to the high school to see for myself. what kind of an environment is that? is there a problem with the cafeteria? i saw carts of food in the hallways providing food to the students.
i know people abuse their right to use school computers for personal use during work hours; i see it at my place of employment. i am sure teachers probably chat online throughout the day, not to mention texting. if there are rules for students regarding cell phones, (i know huber has such rules), the same should apply for teachers/staff. our students deserve your full attention! "

" If students and staff are not able to voice their true concerns about issues then you teach them to shower you with praise just so that they are considered team players. Debate, disagreements and discussion are healthy things that help everyone grow and learn. Even the Douglas Education Association marches right along now. You do not hear a peep out of them anymore. " It is a real mess. I wish parents/guardians would come down to the high school(PLEASE)and visit the classes, bathrooms, cafeteria they are not allowed to use at lunch time because they eat standing in the hallways. The school feels blah. Oh, but the former principal would not let you sit and observe your childs teacher teach. Why? I bet some students will tell you because some teachers don't teach. The teachers have the students just read their subject book, while the teacher is "busy" on the computer. I know this for a fact because I am a student, my last year thank God. I want to make it clear, it's not all the teachers, there are great teachers at DHS, its just the ones that are making our lives miserable seem to have the most power there. I am really hopeful with Principal Schneider. Sir, please change the H.S. "

Hey Good Luck wrote on Aug 7, 2010 8:16 PM:

" You have no idea what you are saying. Thank God for the "previous" administration. The school was never better, academically and physically! Only those of us who have worked through many administrations know the facts, The administration under Bonnie Lopez was the best!!! I'm not saying it can't get better because our new principal is solid n his knowledge, I am worried about Randy Walker he is no where near Dr. Simmons level, Dan Bates is Dan Bates. But Bonnie Lopez was relentless in her efforts to step it up. She had complete respect from our staff. Mr. Schneider can continue to do so because he is prepared. Dr. Simmons and Bonnie Lopez truly cared for DHS. How many times did Lopez defend DHS, to the Board and to the public. How many times did Dr. Simmons work so hard to steer us toward achievement. I always knew we could count on Dan Bates to work with our students, Bonnie Lopez to believe we could always do better and Dr. Simmons to enlighten us. Sorry "Good Luck" you are 100% wrong! "

" lets to the positive side of everything! the previous administration in my opinion has done a great jobin keeping the school as a performing plus school. that is something to be proud of. i think lopez left the school in good shape and wish her the best in her new job. bates and walker along with the new principal will do great! the only loss here is that of earl simmons that has worked hard to improve AIMS score since he has been at DHS!!

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL!! "

" Exactly what mess are you talking about?? Last three years DHS has been highly performing and just missed exceeding by decimal points so please explain? I am thinking you are a wanna be parent or student who didnt get "their way". Put up or shut up. "

" Surely the district could have done better than hiring two crackers who look rather 'right wing' to be caught up in the somewhat tan mix of DHS "

To Good Luck wrote on Aug 5, 2010 6:11 PM:

" You must be brain dead. There is no "mess left behind by previous administration." The administration left a better equipped school,in every aspect. DHS had never before been a "performing plus" school, high graduation rate and a staff that is professional and dedicated. No one can take away from how far DHS has come. A DHS diploma means something because now you have to earn it. The new adminstration is lucky to come into a school that is ready to go.So to "Good Luck" I think YOU need the luck because you are obviously misinformed or have a personal problem. Mrs. Lopez and Dr. Simmons did an outstanding job. They worked hard and gave alot to the school. I thank them because they believed in our kids! "
