The kick off of the event took place outside of the store at 8 a.m., on Friday, August 27, with the American Legion Honor Guard presenting honors to the American Flag, the singing of the National Anthem by Cecilia Yanez, and followed by an invocation and blessing by Father Robert Rodriguez, Saint Bernard Catholic Church.
Juan Hernandez, store manager, was the first to speak to the audience thanking all those who made possible the renovation of the store, and gave a general explanation about the reasons of the renovation. “We are here to save people`s money so they can live better.”
After Hernandez, WalMart Market Manager, Terry Butler shared a message to all personnel. “Founder of the company, Sam Walton, lived by three basic believes. One is “Respect of the individual”, another is “Serve to the needs of the customer; they are our bosses” and, “Try for excellence.”
Continuing with the celebration, Branon Dixon, Regional Operations Manager recognized 12 associates who have worked at the Douglas WalMart store since its original opening in 1992. In addition, store associates presented a total of $6,900 in grants from the WalMart Foundation to local organizations.
“It feels good to work to a company that wants to be part of the community, not only providing shopping experiences and investing money back to the store, but also to give back to the local leaders, local charities and local organizations here in Douglas.” said Dixon.
The local organizations who received the grants included:

After all Sam Walton made WalMart a rich company by keeping employees as part time workers so they would not have to pay them benefits. They paid low wages and most employees qualify for food stamps and cannot afford to pay for medical health problems. So WalMart actually drains thousands of dollars from communities because social service organizations have to take care of their workers since the company won't do it. All because we like saving money by buying cheap products made in China. "
