Much to no ones surprise Buena has cancelled its scrimmage with Douglas which was scheduled for tomorrow at the new Astroturf field at Douglas High School.

Now the Bulldogs head to Tucson today to face Pueblo.

Douglas High School Athletic Officials said last week Buena’s new head coach Mark Schaefer said he was unaware of any previous agreement by former head coach Kent Howard and their former athletic director and the Buena coaches and went ahead and made arrangements to scrimmage Pueblo.

“I apologized to Douglas for not being able to go there Thursday,” Schaefer told the Sierra Vista Herald last week. “But Pueblo helped us out last year and I did not want to leave them in a lurch.”

Schaefer said he would have liked to have scrimmaged at Douglas if for no other reason than Buena’s first opponent, Vail Cienega, plays on a similar field turf.

Pueblo declined Douglas’ offer to come down and play on the new field but did extend the offer for the Dogs to go to Tucson.

Being it was too late to find another opponent to scrimmage the Douglas coaches had little coach but to accept the Pueblo offer.

Former Douglas Athletic Director Randy Walker said he has emails from not only Howard but Buena’s former Athletic Director Greg Duce.

Joe Farmer is Buena’s interim athletic director while Duce is on leave. Attempts to reach Farmer for comment were unsuccessful.

Earlier in the week Douglas’ football coach Dick Keith was somewhat upset by what had happened with Buena.

On Friday when asked about the scrimmage cancellation he had mellowed.

“It’s bothersome but we’re over it,” he said. There was an agreement we had made earlier and again in July but it didn’t work out.”

Keith said Pueblo was very gracious towards Douglas allowing the Dogs to go to Tucson and not only scrimmage Pueblo but Buena as well.

“He (the Pueblo coach) did not know of the commitment Buena had made to us,” Keith said. “We’ll go to Pueblo and run 15 plays against Pueblo, 15 against Buena. They’ll do the same against us then we’ll come home.”

Douglas kicks off its season Aug. 27 against Bisbee in what will be the 140th meeting between the two schools.

The Bulldogs will then be off the following week before returning to action Sept. 10 at Nogales.
