Douglas High School’s golf team kicked off its season last Thursday with a second place performance in a triangular match played at the Douglas Golf Course.

Bruce Whetten/Douglas Dispatch Douglas golfer Eric Valenzuela chips a shot onto the ninth hole in the Bulldogs season opener last Thursday with Buena and Palo Verde. Valenzuela finished with a 42 over nine holes helping Douglas to a second place finish behind Buena but ahead of Palo Verde.

Buena, a 5A school from Sierra Vista, won the match shooting a 164. Douglas was second with a 179 while Gila Regional foe Palo Verde was third with a 242.

Gabriel Ortega led the Bulldogs shooting a team low 37.

Eric Valenzuela, playing in the third slot for Douglas followed with a 42 shooting seven strokes better than his twin brother Martin who recorded a 49.

Robbie Romero shot a 51 for Douglas and Reynaldo Ortiz closed out with a 52.

After the match Douglas’ golf coach Bosco Selchow said his team didn’t play all that bad.

“Gabriel shot very well,” the coach said. “I expected that from him. - Eric also had a good score.”

The other three golfers were taking too many shots on some of the holes on the front nine, the coach said.

“We have a lot of young kids out here, mostly sophomores and juniors” Selchow said. “They have a lot of learning to do. This is a good starting point.”

The Bulldogs return to the course this Thursday taking on Sabino in Tucson.
