Area students compete in annual Spelling Bee

What an amazing present for


FRANCISCO BARRIOS/DOUGLAS DISPATCH Wyatt Brittain, from Pearce Elementary School in Pearce, Arizona. Brittain receives the First place award from Trudy Berry, Cochise County School Superintendent. Awards included a $100 check and the paperwork to fill to go to the next stage for the 2011 Arizona State Spelling Bee. Brittain’s winning word was Macadamia.

County Spelling Bee held on February

19 at Buena High School in

Sierra Vista.

A total of 28 Cochise County

students participated in the

Spelling Bee this time, six of them

being from Douglas’ schools. Mc-

Neal and Elfrida elementary

schools participated as well.

Local students participating

were Erik Barrales, Joe Carlson

Elementary; Courtney Bremer,

McNeal Elementary; Apolonia

Bustamante, Paul Huber Elementary;

Luna Carpio, Clawson Elementary;

Jaime Garate, Loretto

Catholic School; John Minter, Elfrida

Elementary; Ulysses Portugal,

Omega Alpha Academy

School; and Jerusha Rebustes,

Stevenson Elementary.

Trudy Berry, Cochise County

School Superintendent welcomed

everyone who attended to the program.

She mentioned how happy

she was for the effort of all participants

and congratulated them for

their courage and enthusiasm. Pronouncer Elaine Carlson

said “I know how hard is

to study for these type of

competitions; I know the

hours and hours you put in

this effort and all of you kids

can feel now as winners, because

that’s what you are.”

After reading the rules and

introducing contestants and

judges as well, a practice

round was held to help the

kids manage the feeling of

nervousness. Finally, a total

of nine rounds were necessary

to determine the winners

of the 2011 Spelling

Bee.

    " This is a nice article, but the student pictured in this article is the runner up, not Wyatt Brittain. She did a fabulous job, too, and should be commended! I tried to send an e-mail to the editor requesting a correction but it failed to go through. "
