Largest moon in decades
On March 19th, 2011, a full Moon of rare size and beauty arose to impress all viewers with its yellow color and its clarity. This full moon was the biggest in almost 20 years. The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993. Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee): diagram. Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit.

Food drive success
More than 2,000 pounds of food was collected during a joint Southwest Gas and Salvation Army food drive earlier this month. As part of Southwest Gas Corporation's 80th anniversary celebration, the Blue Crew (employee volunteer team Building Lives Up Everywhere) is coordinating the first Salvation Army food drive for the community of Douglas. A number of other community members supporting the drive. Collection bins were located at Douglas PPEP-TEC, Southwest Gas, APS, Wal-Mart, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs, Omega Alpha Academy, Douglas Unified School District, City Of Douglas and Douglas Fire Department. The food will be distributed by the Salvation Army at 1000 Pan American Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pictured at the new facility is Maria Valencia, Salvation Army; Efrem Ruiz, Sr., Joe Salcido, John Sproul, Sammy Cox, and Marisa Zepeda, Southwest Gas; Tina Jaime and Anna Luna, Salvation Army; and Jody Godoy, Southwest Gas.

In an effort to alleviate traffic, all vehicles traveling southbound to access the Port of Entry will be diverted to 3rd Street via Chino Road. This traffic access will be “One-Way” from Chino Road to Pan American Avenue. Commercial traffic is already being diverted to 3rd Street via H Avenue.

Burglary investigation turns into explosives search

Stowers resigns as Historical Society president
Rebecca Stowers resigned as president of the Douglas Historical Society at the annual meeting on March 1St. She had served in that office for four years. In 2007 when she became president, the volunteer pool had dried up and the society was on the verge of collapse. She said she couldn’t let that happen.

County supervisors put hold on restoration project for century-old building
BISBEE �” Though the county Board of Supervisors awarded a $3.849 million contract to Concord General Contracting for the restoration of the former Phelps Dodge building in Douglas on Tuesday, one supervisor wanted to slow things down to take a closer look at preserving the massive pillars and beautiful wooden and wrought iron staircase and railing in the more than 100-year-old building.

Big Red dog visits Clawson
Clifford the Dog was outside the school posing with students and signaling parents to go inside the library and take a look at what the Book Fair has to offer. The Book fair began on March 23. March 24 was family night and was open until 7 p.m. Every other day it will be open until 3 p.m. Children and parents were intrigued that Clifford was at their school and took their children to the library to pick out some books. These children wanted a picture with Clifford the dog: Carlos Cavazos, Rachel Ruiz, Julio Curiel, Jazlynn Lopez, Marissa Cuevas, Rene Valenzuela and Vanessa Fuentes. The book fair ends today.
