The victim was later identified as Carlos La Madrid of Douglas by law enforcement officials. La Madrid later died at Sierra Vista Regional Health Center. He had been transported to Southeast Arizona Medical Center after the shooting, and they attempted to airlift him to Tucson. But high winds and his worsening condition made Sierra Vista the next logical site.
On Monday March 21, at approximately 12:43 p.m. the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was advised of an Officer involved shooting near the International boundary east of the Douglas Port of Entry.
Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators arrived on scene and were advised that Douglas Police Department observed a Chevy Avalanche traveling in the Douglas area that appeared to be suspicious. Once the driver of the vehicle observed the Douglas Police Department unit, the driver fled at a high rate of speed southbound towards the International boundary.
US Border Patrol Agents were in the area when the vehicle made it to the border. At this time, there were rocks thrown at the Border Patrol agent who then fired his duty weapon striking the driver three times.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation also responded and will be conducting a joint investigation with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office in this incident.
The Sheriff will investigate the shooting, while the FBI will handle the assault on a federal officer.

OK you stand there and let someone throw rocks at your head and see what happens. If they are not deadly, why is it a method of capital punishment in the Middle East. And we condemn them for this type of punishment; but it's OK because he's protecting the border from terrorists, crime and those drugs that many soo cravingly want.

Carlos did have drugs and an illegal immigrant in his truck. If he wasn't doing something illegal, why was he fleeing? Why were his buddies there with a ladder to help him cross? oh that was just a lucky coincidence huh?He was an American, why was he trying to illegally cross into Mexico during his flight from cops? Mexico has immigration laws too that require entering at the Port, not going over the fence. Carlos made his choices that day, he is not the law abiding angel you want people to believe. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at Carlos and his family for being drug smugglers and putting themselves in a situation that took Carlos' life. "

Rocks can kill someone just as easy as a knife or a bullet, especially if the rock is big enough.
Which would you rather have, a dead drug runner, or a dead agent who was hit by a rock??? "

This young man obviously was no stranger to the business of narcotics and the death and destruction that business brings. He choose to run placing his well being and the well being of innocents at risk.
As for the BP agent, he had a job to do and he was placed in harms way based on that young mans actions. Now he will stand the investigation good or bad outcome.and carry this action with him through his natural life.
Douglas we need to pray for all who were involved. "

The loss of a life is sad, however, when anyone feel they are above the law, they will eventually pay the piper. We see everyday the affects the cartels, and a national drug/lawless mentality has on society - it ain't gonna happen here - PERIOD!
My sympathy to the young man's family.
"Mark" pretty irresponsible statement, if you can back it up you have an obligation to do so. If not, we all know where your head is! "

As for the windshield being cracked as opposed to broken, do you think the Agent would have cared if those rocks had hit his head and cracked it instead of breaking it? Don't be stupid, either way, a rock can be a deadly weapon.
The Agent did what he felt was needed in order to protect his own life. He didn't start the fight, but he sure did end it.
And for popping tires, vehicles can go a long way on flats and then what were cops supposed to do? Walk up and gently arrest him because he was obviously so willing to be arrested? "

You have absolutely no what you are talking about. I am currently a BP Agent in CA and it sickens me to read what you have posted. Imagine someone throwing a baseball 10 feet from you and striking you in the head. MLB players have been knocked out and suffered severe head injuries from similar incidents and they wear helmets . Now take that rock and add jagged edges and sharp points. Now do you still think its just a little ol' rock.
Upsetofthis-in no Law enforcement handbook it says shoot to wound and you never shoot tires, this isnt a video game or make believe child games. grow up
DOUGLASRESIDENT- I knew of someone who got rocked while in his vehicle and yea it just shattered the glass but glass fragments got in his eyes and destroyed his left cornea. Let me guess they didnt put that on the news because its ok to assault a law enforcement officer.
mark-corrupt? Fearing for ones life is corrupt. Let me stand in front of you and start throwing rocks.....are you going to thank me then walk away. You are being assaulted and Im pretty sure thats a crime.
Monica-same goes for you, your ignorant to look at the bigger picture. the rocks thrown by these criminals arent your little round soft garden stones. it is considered a deadly weapon. A beer bottle or glass bottle is considered a deadly weapon, fist deadly weapon, broom stick etc. He was trying to harm, injury or even kill the agent. if not why didnt he throw flowers or his wallet or his drugs that were in the car. Why dont you stop being one sided and look what actually is going on.
You guys that are trying to put down the BP agent should be ashamed of yourselves. Trying to protect america, his life and others lives and you all spit on him. Straight ignorance!
Please respond.......Im stating facts and ignorant opinions are being posted. "

he was running dope.
he ran away from douglas pd and sherriff.
he fled at a high rate of speed through the city of douglas.
he crashed into the bp.
he threw rocks.
he's dead.
and there are people out there who are mad that he was killed?
thank god he didn't kill any bystanders with his pendejadas running through douglas at high speed
thank god no other innocent bystanders were killed when he finally stopped
thank god an all out war didn't start at the border with his spotters watching from the roof top across the border
thank god they stopped this criminal who apparently wasn't his first time running dope.
this is what is wrong with our society. people don't take responsibility for their actions.
instead of people saying "he got what he deserved for breaking the law"... they are saying "dumb border patrol is afraid of rocks".
may he rest in peace. he is now facing his true judge, GOD! may his family rest knowing that their son isn't running drugs anymore. may the community of douglas rest knowing one less criminal is off the street. may the law enforcement agencies involved rest knowing they did their job. "
