“Apparently, Mr. Smith had laid down in the field there,” Capas said.
“He was not visible from either roadway.”
An Arizona Department of Corrections canine detection team and members of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team came upon Smith in the field.
Medical personnel who were called to the scene found that he appeared dehydrated and had severe, open-wound blistering on his feet after he had taken off his shoes, she said.
Smith was airlifted from the area by an Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter to the Southeastern Arizona Medical Center in Douglas for treatment of his injuries, which were not life-threatening, Capas said.
Smith was first reported missing from the Paradise Group Home at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
It is believed he was attempting to walk to Safford, where members of his family lives.
