An illegal immigrant who was taken into custody two weeks ago in Douglas pleaded not guilty to drug related charges during an arraignment hearing in Cochise County Superior Court on Monday.

Jesus Manuel Chino Lino, 16, is charged with conspiring to commit transportation of marijuana weighing more than 2 pounds for sale, and transportation of marijuana for sale weighing more than 2 pounds on March 21.

He is also facing charges of possession of marijuana for sale weighing more than 4 pounds, and using or possessing with intent to use burlap and cellophane to contain marijuana weighing more than 4 pounds on that same date.

Division 5 Judge James Conlogue scheduled his trial to begin on July 25 in Division 4 court. A pre-trial conference will be held on June 17 in Division 4. The defendant is currently being held without bond.

On March 21, Chino Lino was arrested in Douglas and booked into the county jail after he and Carlos La Madrid, 19, allegedly fled a Chevrolet Avalanche containing 48 pounds of bundled marijuana, according to authorities.

La Madrid reportedly ran toward the U.S.-Mexico border fence. At least one man on top of the fence was allegedly throwing rocks at Border Patrol agents.

An agent then used his duty weapon
to fatally shoot La Madrid three times in the back.
