The Douglas Art Gallery hosted the Douglas Area Community Fund on Friday, April 1 to recognize and thank all the advisor and board members with an appreciation dinner for their effort in creating an organization that works for the good of the local activities and people.
Priority Ready Lanes at the border
U.S. Customs and Border Protection will announce the start of an RFID priority Ready Lane for travelers with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology enabled documents at the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry starting Monday, April 11, 2011. Robin Dohne, 54, from Redbank, NJ, and Paul Ries, 53, from Palo Alto, Ca, rode their bike through Douglas on Thursday, March 31. They are on the Pac Tour Northern Transcontinental where they ride 3,415 miles in 30 days. Dohne and Ries had just rode from Sierra Vista and were on their way to Lordsburg, NM with the rest of the bikers.

Largest moon in decades
On March 19th, 2011, a full Moon of rare size and beauty arose to impress all viewers with its yellow color and its clarity. This full moon was the biggest in almost 20 years. The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993. Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee): diagram. Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit.

Food drive success
More than 2,000 pounds of food was collected during a joint Southwest Gas and Salvation Army food drive earlier this month. As part of Southwest Gas Corporation's 80th anniversary celebration, the Blue Crew (employee volunteer team Building Lives Up Everywhere) is coordinating the first Salvation Army food drive for the community of Douglas. A number of other community members supporting the drive. Collection bins were located at Douglas PPEP-TEC, Southwest Gas, APS, Wal-Mart, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs, Omega Alpha Academy, Douglas Unified School District, City Of Douglas and Douglas Fire Department. Local employment stabilizes in February
According to figures released by the Arizona Research Administration, formerly part of the Arizona Department of Commerce and now housed in the governor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Budgeting, nonfarm jobs in Cochise County stabilized at January levels in February. In the 12 months ended in February, Cochise County saw a net loss of 475 jobs for a 12-month job growth rate of -1.3 percent.

Sales tumble in county, up in Douglas
In January, Cochise County’s retail and accommodation sales were down, while restaurant and bar sales were up, compared to January last year. Retail sales in January were down 7.9 percent after the inflation adjustment. On March 17, the Coronado Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) awarded scholarships under the Colonel Eric R. Osborne Scholarship Program. As with past years experience, the Selection Committee was impressed by the high quality of all the students interviewed. They were articulate, of high academic standing, active in a variety of school activities and excellent citizens of their community. All were highly deserving of the scholarships. Big Red dog visits Clawson
Clifford the Dog was outside the school posing with students and signaling parents to go inside the library and take a look at what the Book Fair has to offer. The Book fair began on March 23. March 24 was family night and was open until 7 p.m. Every other day it will be open until 3 p.m. Children and parents were intrigued that Clifford was at their school and took their children to the library to pick out some books. These children wanted a picture with Clifford the dog: Carlos Cavazos, Rachel Ruiz, Julio Curiel, Jazlynn Lopez, Marissa Cuevas, Rene Valenzuela and Vanessa Fuentes. The book fair ends today.

Holocaust surviver delivers powerful speech
El Paso Holocaust Museum and Holocaust survivor, Henry Kellen, was honored at the Cochise College Campus in Douglas, last Thursday. Over 200 people sat in during his two hour long speech and presentation. Among the audience was CAAP, Collegio Americano de Agua Prieta, young students from Sonora, Mexico.
