Douglas’ Recreational Center, located on 919 3rd Street, offers an Afterschool Program for children 5-12 years old. Not only is it beneficial because of the activities that they do, but it’s also free!

The afterschool program is a great place for kids to go to afterschool because the staff focuses on helping the children with their homework in the first hour and after that it is all about being proactive. Jennifer Smith is the coordinator for the program and said that they definitely promote physical fitness. The rec. center is open to them from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“The kids love to be out in the sun, so we try to get them involved in sports such as kickball, baseball, basketball and other physical activities” said Jacque Olivas who is a recreational aid. “We also have arts and crafts, the pool table room, and movies for them to watch.”

It is very important to the staff that the children always stay busy and interact with one another. The facility also has a playground for the younger children and a neighboring park, where they can play basketball. There are about twenty kids a day, so the children like the fact that they not only have a chance to finish school work, but also have plenty of other children that they can talk to and play with.

The program is free and parents only need to fill out an application form at the office on site. Parents or anyone that has questions may call 520-417-7340.
