Recently, KVOA, Channel 4 from Tucson broadcast a story about Katie and Delaney, two senior Chihuahuas that found loving arms among senior citizens from Oro Valley. What maybe people don’t know is that Katie and Delaney are Douglas natives.

Francisco Barrios/Douglas Dispatch Douglas Animal Shelter staff, from left, Larmie Moury, Technician; Dr. Jen Wilcox; and Jenison Silva, clinic manager invites Douglas community to visit the Animal Shelter and maybe adopting an animal.

The Douglas Animal Shelter rescued these two dogs after their owner, Cecilia Kammerer passed away on March 31. But according to Pete Estrada, from the Douglas Police Department, since the Chihuahua breed is hard to be adopted, the Douglas Animal Shelter had to turn them to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in Tucson to look for an adopting opportunity for them. “Small dogs, if they are friendly, sociable dogs, they’re highly demanded by elderly people. Unfortunately (there is not much adoption) in this area, compared to the Tucson area. It is not often that two dogs are adopted at the same time.”

But according to the Douglas Animal Shelter and Estrada, not all the rescued dogs have the same luck as Katie and Delaney. “Today (Friday, June 17), we found a poodle dog, “Madison”, we groomed it and we discover that he was in really bad shape. Apparently he was “trashed” by former owners.” It looks that this poodle can be considered as an “adoptable dog” and the Animal Shelter is currently trying to give a good care in order to find a good home for him in the future.

Estrada also said “By law, if the animal has a collar or we know the owner, we keep the dog for five working days. If the dog is not claimed, we keep the animal for 72 hours, but if it is an adoptable dog we can keep it from three to ten days to find a good home for it. The last resort is to put the animal to sleep. But, the Animal Shelter has assisted us in rescuing the animals in an excellent way. And if wasn’t for the Humane Society the euthanasia rate would be higher than what is now.”

Options for animals

According to the Animal Shelter, anyone from Douglas and the surrounding area can visit them if they want to adopt a pet. The process is very easy and they will contribute to better the future of animals that deserve a better chance to survive.

For more information about adopting a pet people can visit the Animal Shelter, located at 2017 N. Rodgers Ave. or call (520) 417-7567 or visit the website www.petfinder.com.

" Is there an update as to the disciplinary action taken against Ofc. Estrada in the unnecessary and irresponsible killing of Blue who was on his way to rescue? ...

... According to Smiling Dog Rescue, Blue was killed by Officer Estrada at the Douglas Animal Control facility on Sunday...24 hours before his happily ever after.

    According to Smiling Dog Rescue:

SDR spoke with Estrada today in an effort to learn why he had prematurely and unnecessarily killed an innocent dog who had a home - he had no reasonable explanation. SDR also spoke to Estrada's supervisor, Lt. Fullin. Fullin admitted that this officer had been disciplined before, had no authority in this case to kill this dog, and would face further disciplinary action because of it.

" Hey Officer Estrada. There is possible employment with the county under dog catcher. I'd hate to see you go, but you deserve better. Your hard work and dedication is not recognized by either the public or the city. If it wasn't for your hard work and long hours, I would have never been able to find our perfect dog. Boy, talk about a mix of breeds. But he our companion and guardian angel to our kids. Thank you. "

" In my many visits to the shelter, it was filthy and had a horenduous odor. The animals were usually standing or laying in their own feces and urine. Bowls were empty of food and water. The animals were under stress and were moved about by basically strangling them! Now, I'm proud to say that I enjoy visiting the shelter. It's clean and almost odorless. The dogcatcher is doing an excellent job and should be recognised for this. All I've heard about Peter are positive and favorable things. Too bad not everyone is as dedicated in helping the animals, as he is. Peter just doesn't take off his uniform and ignores the animals. Peter can be called upon regardless of time or day. Holidays included. Now we know who the top "DAWG" is. "

" The Animal Care Officers, of the Douglas Pound, are the greatest. With little money, and very little support, they do their best to find homes for the dogs that cross their threshold. I have known Pete to drive to Benson, on his own time & on his own dime, to take a dog to a rescue where it stands a chance of finding a loving home. I only wish the Sheriff's office would allocate more money for them "
