Desvariaciones of the Mexican song at Cochise College

On November 30, the Cochise College Little Theater at Douglas Campus hosted Desvariaciones de la Cancion Mexicana, a musical show that deals with the problem of illegal immigration to the United States with a sense of humor. The show was presented by Verania Lucero, singer and actress and Hector Acosta, pianist, arranger and music director, both from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

Lori Keyne, Music Instructor and Director of Cultural Events at the College said this is an effort to join both cultures thanks to a Fulbright proposal she received this year to promote the better understanding of both cultures. “This show is just a small portion of what is possible to bring to Douglas,” said Keyne. “And we are very happy to have these wonderful people with us today.”

In the show, Lucero does the roll of “La Madre Patria” and narrates the story of one of her sons “Vicente Mario” an illegal immigrant that crosses the border looking for the American dream; making fun of the Mexican culture and the transformation of his everyday life into the Mexican-American culture.

The message is presented through a series of popular Mexican songs but arranged by Acosta with a touch of the American Blues and Jazz styles.
