ISMAEL V. RAMIREZ

Ismael V. Ramirez of Douglas, Arizona went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 7, 2012 after a long battle of cardiac and kidney issues. Mr. Ramirez was born on June 17, 1940 in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. Ismael was a professional baseball player in the late 50’s and early 60’s playing 3rd base for the Vaqueros of Agua Prieta, Sonora. He later met and married Josefina Reyes Ramirez and made Douglas his home. Mr. Ramirez retired from the City of Douglas in 1998 where he worked as a leadman/foreman for the Public Works Division. Ismael was preceded in death by his loving wife Josefina Ramirez, Parents Lazaro and Andrea Ramirez, Sister Maria Jesus Ramirez and Brothers Thomas Ramirez and Juventino Ramirez. He is survived by his son Gerardo “Jerry” Ramirez, nephew Raul (Guadalupe) Montano, Sr., sisters Ofelia Ramirez Valdez and Antonia Ramirez Valdez, brother Lorenzo Ramirez Valdez, Sister-in-Laws Ofelia (Rodolfo) Gaytan, Jr. and Angelita Morales along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012 at the Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Chapel with father Gilbert Malu officiating. Cremation will follow the Mass. Pallbearers who will serve are Francisco Carrillo, Luis Fimbres, Sr., Hector Gomez, Tony Carbarga, Abelardo Franco and Jose Berry. Honorary Pallbearers are Gerardo (Jerry) Ramirez, Rodolfo Gaytan, Jr., Lorenzo Ramirez Valdez, Raul Montano, Sr. and Raul Montano, Jr. The family would like to convey their heartfelt thanks for all the excellent care giving to Ismael Ramirez to Dr. Ellinas, Dr. Lodge, Copper Queen Community Hospital, University Medical Center, Dr. Smith, Dr. Deluca and all the ICU nurses.

Beloved Wife, Sister, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Aunt and special friend to so very many, EVELYN LAMAR RICHINS HERBERT, age 89, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Southeast Medical Center. Evelyn was born on August 22, 1922 in Chandler, Arizona to Wellington B. Richins and Edith Winifred Mortensen Richins. She is survived by her husband George Melvin Herbert; Brother, Duane Richins of Mesa; Brother-in-Law Wilson Herbert of Douglas and Sister-in-Law, Cleo Duthie of Safford. She is also survived by her daughters, Penny (Julius) Maklary of Douglas; Diane (Reid) Kempton of Yuma and Sherri (Don) Driggs of Yuma. She leaves behind 10 Grandchildren; 13 Great-Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Cleone Magnusson and Irma Harris both of Phoenix. Evelyn was a graduate of Mesa High School. Evelyn married George Melvin Herbert in the Mesa Temple on November 22, 1940, a marriage that lasted 71 years. Evelyn was first and foremost a homemaker, she also worked in a doctor’s office, was a companion to Mrs. Lavender, worked at Flower Lane Florist, was the exhibits secretary for the Cochise County Fair and was an election board worker for elections. She loved sunsets and nature. Evelyn, lovingly known as Mouse, was loved by so very many and will be greatly missed by us all. We will remember in our own special way her voice, her style, her laugh, her smile, her words, her grace, her eyes, her face, her love, her life, and everything that made her so special in all our lives will live on through our memories. Please rest in peace until we meet again. Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 9, 2012 at the Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. Pallbearers who served were Bryan Babicky, Scott Babicky, Dan Collingridge, Tyler Coniam, Matthew Driggs, Cole Hunt, Dustin Maklary and Zack Vega. Jack Edward “Jackie” King , was born on the 16th of July 1945 in Corpus Christi, TX and passed from this world into the arms of our Lord Jesus at his home in Willcox, AZ on the 2nd of January 2012.Jackie was the oldest of five children, born to James Daniel and Dorothy Louise King. He worked for Horizon Land Corporation in Sunsites, AZ on the golf course, cotton gins in Elfrida and Willcox, as well as a small ranch in Elfrida, AZ. He was passionate about all things pertaining to cowboys from Roy Rogers to Gene Autry to John Wayne. One of his life’s highlights was meeting Gary “Duke” Maxwell, John Wayne’s stunt double. Jackie battled cancer for the past year, never losing his will to fight. His strength and true grit gave him the courage to continue on until taking his final breath.Jackie is survived by his wife Beverly, sons Aaron Brunson of Millersburg, OH and Jason King of Tucson, his mother Doris King, his sisters Patsy Parr and Gloria Collier both of Granbury, TX and his brothers Calvin King of Willcox, Kurt Carroll ofTerrell, TX and his best friend Jackie Telles of Elfrida whom his considered his brother. Also surviving are his grandchildren Samuel, Onnika and Andie Brunson of Sierra Vista, AZ, Ciera, Brexton and Braiden Thomas of Millersburg, OH and Hunter and Taylor King both of Tucson, along with numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his father and mother. Memorial Services were held at the First Southern Baptist Church of Elfrida on Thursday, January 5, 2012 with Dale Hedges presiding. Hilda N. Diaz passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. Hilda was born on October 4, 1925 in Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico to Manuel and Hortencia Ballesteros Noriega. She was very active at the Immaculate Conception Church, was a Cursillista involved in the Curisillo movement, she was active in the Democratic Party volunteering in the polling locations for all city and federal elections. She enjoyed traveling with her late husband David H. Diaz and lived for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Hortencia Ballesteros Noriega, Son Daniel A. Diaz, Brother Adolfo Noriega, Sisters Bertha Mata and Norma Torres. Her surviving family includes her children, Celia (Charles E.) Austin, Laura (Mario) Merino, and David (Mary Ann) Diaz, 12 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, Siblings Manuel “Baby” Noriega, Father Arnoldo Noriega, Panchita Rodriguez, Clarissa Mercer, Graciela Enriquez along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary for Hilda will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2012 also at Immaculate Conception Church with her brother Father Arnoldo Noriega officiating. Also surviving are brothers David Ralph Romero, Guy Earl Scott Wilber IV and sisters Sabrina Zamora, Athina Mancha, Cathy Lindsley and Bernadette Cornidez. Patsy loved her animals, listening to music, family and friend time. She was a simple woman who satisfied with the simple things in life. Patsy was a caring and selfless woman and worried about others before herself. She was a pharmacy technician for many years.

Florencio T. “Sammy” Arciniega, Jr.

Our most merciful and loving Lord God took our beloved husband, father, son, brother, Tata and friend. He departed peacefully at home among his loving family, on January 19, 2012, after a courageous battle against cancer. Sammy was born November 4, 1949 to Florencio T. Arciniega, Sr. and Teresa A. Arciniega of Douglas, AZ. He was a resident of Douglas for most of his life. Sammy graduated from Douglas High School in 1969 and in February of 1970 he joined the U.S. Navy. He successfully completed his boot camp training in San Diego, CA. He was later assigned sea duty on the U.S.S. Bainbridge DLGN-25. His battle station was at the forward 5” gun mount as the breech loader. The ship was assigned duty off the coastal waters of Viet Nam. Sammy was honorably discharged. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal with bronze cluster, Meritorious Unit Citation and the Presidential Unit Citation for commendable service. Sammy returned to Douglas and attended Cochise College. Completing his studies there he went on to ASU and graduated with a BA in Criminal Justice in 1975. While at the University he became involved with the Native American movement. During the fourth of July Parade he was given the honor of escorting the Grand Marshall who was the father of Ira Hays the World War II hero of Iwo Jima. He was a Correctional Officer at the Long Beach Correctional Facility and the Lon Poc Correctional Facility in California. He returned to Douglas and was hired as a JAG (Jobs for Arizona Graduates) counselor. He very much enjoyed teaching high school students. Sammy was employed at Fort Huachuca with Personnel Civilian Recourses. After thirty years of faithful service, he retired. Sammy was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve later transferring to the U.S. Army Reserve and was honorably discharged. Sammy was a member of St. Luke’s Parish, and as a young boy, served as alter boy. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Fred Hilburn Post 11 and marched with the legendary Drum and Bugle Corp. He served many post positions and was a member of the Honor Guard. He was a Scout Master for troop 426 of Post 11. Sammy was also a member of the VFW and served many post positions there as well. He and his wife Martha were very involved in the organizations and fundraisers to erect the beautiful Douglas Veterans Memorial dedicated in 2000. Sammy’s family knew him as a great Patriot who loved his family and this great country. They were proud that he was an outspoken advocate or the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Sammy was preceded in death by his father Florencio and two older brothers, Luis and David. He is survived by Martha, his wife of 25 years, his mother and his four children, Mary Francis (Ruben), Samantha M., Florencio T.III, and Michael A. He is also survived by two brothers, Francisco (Sandra) Geronimo (Lorraine) and many nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and cousins. Sammy has been blessed with 15 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. We are all grateful to Sammy. He left us a guiding path to our Lord Jesus Christ. We will miss him dearly. Adios Sammy our beloved “Tumbleweed Chaser.” A Rosary will be recited by Deacon Gonzales in joyous celebration at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Pirtleville. A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at St Luke’s Catholic Church with Fr. Arnold Noriega officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors by the American Legion Post 11 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. The American Legion Riders will escort their fallen comrade. Pallbearers who will serve are: Florencio T. Arciniega III, Michael A. Arciniega, Mark R. Arciniega, Pablo E. Arciniega, Joel Lopez and I-Ric T. Posey. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Francisco Arciniega, Geronimo Arciniega, Geronimo Arciniega, Jr., Teresa M. Noe Arciniega, Jamie Lason, Rene Gonzales and Sergio R. Mendez.

Surviving also are brothers Sigfredo Veles, Teran Trevinio, and George E Trevinio and sister Alba Trevinio. George was an accountant for the City of Douglas. He worked for Fomento Industrial de Puerto Rico and as an accountant for the City of Denton, Texas and Ubalde, Texas. He loved watching the NFL, MLB and loved Sunday school teaching at Templo Bethel.
