On Friday, Jan. 13 at approximately 2:15 p.m., Douglas Police and Douglas Fire Department Personnel were dispatched to the Shell Gas Station, 1801 10th Street, in reference to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, Douglas Police Officers found a seven-year old male child, who had sustained injury to his pelvis and legs area. The child was found lying on the ground by the gas stations pumps after being removed from under the vehicle that struck him. Officers were informed by witness that the child had been struck by a vehicle and possibly ran over with the front tires. Douglas Fire Department personnel arrived and provided medical attention to the child.

Douglas Police Officers met with the driver of the vehicle, which had struck the child and were informed that upon completing his gas purchase, the driver proceeded to drive away from the pump and the young child ran in front of his vehicle. The driver stated that he attempted to stop but struck the child and the driver saw the child fall and the vehicle continued over the child. The driver remained on scene until officers arrived.

The child was later transported to the hospital and subsequently transported to Tucson for his injuries. No citations have been issued in this case and the investigation continues. Officers do not believe any alcohol or drugs were involved.
