Local celebration tonight

The Douglas Centennial Committee, in partnership with the City of Douglas and participating organizations, is sponsoring a Centennial Night Celebration from 4-7 PM in and around the Douglas Art Gallery on 625 10th Street tonight.

Events begin at 4PM and run until 7 PM when 100 birthday balloons will be launched with glow sticks. The committee will award tickets to release balloons to the first 100 attendees. Members will also play a countdown of music hits from the 1920's to Today in anticipation of the launch.

The committee encourages members of the public to join them wherever they are by honking their car horns at 7 PM to wish the State of Arizona a Happy 100th Birthday. If enough people show, Voice of Douglas will record street performances of the Macarena, YMCA Song, and Electric Slide. The committee will place the DVD recording of these performances and interviews from throughout the night in a time capsule to be opened 50 years from now.

The City of Douglas has arranged to close 10th Street between E and F Avenue to accommodate birthday well-wishers and the street performances should they occur.
