Councilman Huish explains why he is not seeking re-election

Dear Editor:

Due to the fact that a number of people have asked why I am not running for Councilman in Ward 5 I think it is time to set the record straight. The reason that I am not running has nothing to do with a lack of desire to serve, or due to my health. It is simply due to the fact that the City or Douglas Charter will not allow me to run again. It states that a council person may not serve more than two consecutive terms in office. I will complete my second consecutive term in June of this year.

It has been a real revelation and experience to have served for so long, but it has been a good experience in trying to do what is best for the City of Douglas.

As a parting gesture I would like to make some recommendations for the upcoming elections. First I would like to recommend to my constituents one of our own for Mayor, that is Danny Ortega. I have known him for many years and have watched him grow up here in Douglas and I have every confidence that he will do what is best for the City of Douglas. I would also like to recommend Luis Greer to take my place on the City Council. I have talked to Luis and I am satisfied that he will represent the citizens of Ward 5 in a sensitive and competent manner. Also, I would hope that Margaret Morales will retain her seat in Ward 1 and that Ben LaForge would win Ward 3. It is always great to be a member of this free country and may we always thank those who spend time and effort to maintain that freedom.

Ivan D. Huish,

Councilman Ward 5, City of Douglas.
