Bulldogs fall to Salpointe at Sectionals

The Douglas Bulldogs fell to the Salpointe Lancers 69-55 Feb. 8 in the first round of the Division II Section I tournament which was played at Flowing Wells High School in Tucson.

Jessie Arias led the Bulldogs in scoring with 24 points. Xavier Altamirano followed with nine, Alexio Esquer chipped in eight and Dominic Barraza contributed five.

Tied 14-14 at the end of the first quarter Salpointe opened up a six point lead in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs fought back to within one on two separate occasion but the Lancers went ahead just before half taking a 38-30 lead at the break. Arias had 15 of Douglas’ points at this point of the game.

Salpointe hit a three to open the third to go up 11 and before the Dogs knew it they were down 17, 49-32.

Douglas pulled within eight as the quarter ended but Salpointe pulled away in the fourth leading by 19 late in the game before Douglas hit a couple of baskets to pull within 14.

The Bulldogs will be on the road Thursday taking on Sunnyslope in the first round of the state playoffs.
